About the Role
  • Lead the design, development, and delivery of new capabilities for Caterpillar Financial's AI workflow platform, leveraging full stack engineering and AI technologies to transform ideas into scalable, production-ready solutions. You'll be the hands-on technical lead for a 6-person global development team: proving ideas quickly with working proofs of concept, setting the engineering bar, and validating that what the team ships is sound. This role partners closely with technical and business stakeholders to solve complex challenges, establish engineering best practices, drive modern software delivery through CI/CD, and ensure AI-enabled capabilities are secure, reliable, and compliant. As a senior technical leader, you will influence the platform's architecture, mentor developers, and help shape the future of one of Caterpillar Financial's most visible technology transformation initiatives. This is a hands-on application engineering role, not a DevOps or cloud infrastructure role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead proof-of-concept and development work for new capabilities, and partner with the Technical Product & Delivery Lead and development team to take them into production
  • Design and build full stack features across React/TypeScript front ends, Python or Node.js services and APIs, and AWS cloud services
  • Drive UI/UX and front-end architecture decisions so Artemis stays intuitive, consistent, and easy to use as it grows
  • Build AI-enabled capabilities and agent-based workflows, including prompt and context design, evaluation, and guardrails that keep them safe and reliable
  • Design and build integrations with enterprise systems such as Snowflake, ServiceNow, Azure DevOps, and GitHub
  • Establish reusable patterns, coding standards, and shared components for the platform
  • Own the platform's test strategy, write and maintain automated tests, and build the test coverage and pipeline practices that move the team toward CI/CD
  • Support production deployments, and lead root-cause analysis on complex production issues to drive lasting fixes
  • Review designs and pull requests in GitHub, approve what moves to production, and mentor developers, reducing key-person dependency and building depth across the team
  • Work with architecture and security partners to test emerging technologies, guide their implementation, and ensure solutions meet Cat Financial's standards and audit requirements
  • Demo new capabilities to stakeholders and turn their feedback into clear technical next steps

What You Bring
  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including building and supporting production applications and 2+ years as a technical lead or go-to code reviewer for a development team
  • Experience mentoring developers and raising code quality through code review and pairing
  • Strong front-end experience with React and TypeScript, building production applications as part of a team
  • Strong back-end experience building services and APIs in Python or Node.js
  • Hands-on experience building applications on AWS cloud services (for example serverless compute, API management, storage, and managed AI services)
  • Experience building integrations with enterprise systems (for example Snowflake, ServiceNow, Azure DevOps, GitHub)
  • Experience working with relational databases and REST APIs
  • Proficiency with GitHub-based workflows, including branching, pull requests, and code review
  • Hands-on experience building generative AI into applications that real users rely on, such as working with large language models, agent-based workflows, retrieval, and evaluation
  • A track record of turning prototypes into production-ready, maintainable solutions
  • Experience writing automated tests and supporting release and deployment processes
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work through ambiguous problems
  • Clear communication with both technical and non-technical audiences

Top candidates will have
  • Experience delivering AI agents or LLM-based solutions in production
  • Experience in financial services or other regulated industries (SOX, audit, IT risk)
  • Experience setting architecture patterns, coding standards, or reusable components for a team or platform
  • Experience building automated test suites and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience designing component libraries or shared UI frameworks
  • Understanding of secure application development practices
  • Experience with workflow, low-code, or process automation platforms
  • Experience with Agile delivery and Azure DevOps

What Success Looks Like
  • Proofs of concept are proven quickly and delivered to production with the team
  • Established patterns and standards are adopted across the platform
  • AI capabilities deliver measurable improvements to delivery workflows
  • Automated test coverage grows, moving the team closer to CI/CD
  • Developers on the team grow, and platform knowledge is shared, reducing key-person dependency

Degree Requirement
A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, a related discipline, or equivalent experience is required.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
