The Role 


Engine Ventures is looking for an exceptional, collaborative, entrepreneurial, and analytical individual to join our investment team as an Associate. The ideal candidates blend deep technical knowledge with operational or other business experience along with strong empathy for the journey of deep tech founders. We seek candidates with interdisciplinary backgrounds that are comfortable working across multiple engineering and scientific domains. 


Associates are core members of the Engine Ventures investment team. You will engage closely with early-stage founders and academics, leading technical and business due diligence while maintaining a keen sense of the commercial opportunities. You will learn about early-stage company formation, value creation and capital fundraising, working alongside Engine Ventures Partners to negotiate deal terms and support the founders as they build their companies. Associates are expected to launch headfirst into the work of growing Engine Ventures, our platform, our networks and our capabilities to serve our portfolio. Engine Ventures is a lean and highly collaborative team committed to developing our talent.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform due diligence, including scientific, technical, and business assessment of investment opportunities, and compose investment memorandums.
  • Develop and maintain a broad network of researchers and entrepreneurs to identify new investment areas and opportunities.
  • Discuss, evaluate, and present new investment opportunities within a flat structure in weekly investment team meetings.
  • Work alongside Partners to structure investments in deep tech.
  • Support portfolio companies post-investment as they grow their teams, consider strategic priorities, develop business models, and raise follow-on capital.
  • Represent Engine Ventures and our mission while advocating for Tough Tech in the startup and academic ecosystems.
  • Be flexible to take on new responsibilities and special projects as they arise, to enable goals across fund programs, events, content, etc.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Graduate degree, preferably PhD, ideally spanning two or more of the following:
  •  Physical sciences, including chemistry or material science OR
  •  Engineering, including chemical, mechanical, electrical or nuclear OR
  •  Life sciences, biology, biophysics or biomedical engineering
  • 2-5+ years of experience in business or product roles in a deep tech company or in management consulting.
  • Strong alignment with Engine Ventures' mission to enable Tough Tech entrepreneurs to build transformative, world-changing companies.
  • Empathy for the entrepreneurial journey and ability to build trust while driving results with entrepreneurs and Engine Ventures teammates.
  • A dedicated team player committed to collaboration.
  • Outstanding analytical skills and strong attention to detail combined with adaptability and creativity.
  • Ability to quickly turn around work product and drive process amidst ambiguity.
  • Superior communication, listening, and critical thinking skills.
