Company Description

The Linux Foundation is creating the greatest shared technology investment in history by enabling open source collaboration across companies, developers, and users. We are the organization of choice to build ecosystems that accelerate open technology development and commercial adoption.

Job Description

We’re looking for an Associate Program Manager to join the Linux Foundation’s Program Management Office. This new role is designed to strengthen project execution and expand our capacity to deliver complex open source initiatives across the organization.

You’ll serve as an operational connector—supporting project delivery, coordinating internal and external stakeholders, and helping open source communities turn plans into real-world impact. If you thrive in a fast-paced, virtual environment and love keeping things on track, this role is for you.

The Linux Foundation is a neutral home for many of the world’s most important open source communities, but those communities often need neutral support to mobilize progress and move objectives forward. We often take on tasks and coordination responsibility that either require neutrality or would otherwise go unsupported due to community bandwidth.

This is a remote, virtual role that can be located anywhere in the United States. In a typical year, overnight and weekend travel to events both domestically and internationally (approximately 1–4 times per year) will be required.

Core Responsibilities

  • Coordinate day-to-day activities across open source projects, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and operational plans.

  • Facilitate project community meetings: prepare agendas, coordinate participants, capture action items, and follow through.

  • Maintain project documentation, records, and membership data with high attention to detail.

  • Partner with project leads, maintainers, and internal teams (e.g., Legal, Marketing, Events, Finance) to ensure smooth execution of key initiatives.

  • Contribute to visibility efforts including blogs, press releases, and event participation.

  • Support budget tracking, expenditure monitoring, and annual planning.

  • Work with technical and non-technical stakeholders to implement open source best practices and project governance standards.

  • Identify and resolve issues that may block progress or reduce program efficiency.

  • Contribute to broader PMO initiatives that improve how we deliver value to open source communities and internal teams.

Qualifications

Desired Experience

  • 2–3 years of experience in program coordination, community facilitation, or project management, including planning, prioritization, and stakeholder communication in a fast-paced virtual environment.

  • Comfortable engaging with both technical and business audiences; able to synthesize and communicate clearly.

  • Working familiarity with tools such as Slack, GitHub, Google Workspace, and CRM systems.

  • Self-directed, proactive, and composed under pressure.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Prior experience with open source communities or ecosystems is a strong plus.

  • Experience working with remote, global teams preferred.

Additional Information

Salary $95,000-110,000 USD

This position is remote and is open to applicants who can work North America time-zone standard business hours. In order to be qualified for employment in this role.

The Linux Foundation is an all-remote-work organization that hires world-class talent. We are as passionate about providing a flexible and supportive work culture as we are about open-source software. Collaboration is in our DNA, and we pride ourselves on being able to work closely together while not being tied to an office. We offer exceptional benefits - e.g., top-of-the-line healthcare, unlimited PTO, Focus Fridays, and a 100% 401k match (up to the IRS-defined limit per year).

The Linux Foundation is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We value diversity and encourage anyone interested to apply! All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
