Reporting to the Head of The Global Insights Center, the Economist will be responsible for researching tends and data related to the economies of the US and international countries. Sectors of the economy that will be of particular focus include construction, housing, labor markets, inflation, autos, consumer demand, and global trade. This analysis will be used by the candidate to formulate US and international economic views and outlooks and their implications for risk. In particular, the output of the research will be utilized by internal departments to help underwriting decisions and risk analysis. The candidate will also research geopolitics and how global trends could affect risk. Furthermore, the candidate will help develop risk models that can help quantify economic and geopolitical trends. Strong knowledge of Excel and modeling is preferred while econometric modeling skills will be additive.

Work Arrangements:

This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement.  Candidates who live near one of our office locations (Hartford, CT, San Antonio, TX, Lake Mary, FL, Phoenix, AZ, Naperville, IL) will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).   Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise. 

Responsibilities:

Conducting Economic analysis

  • Follow and track data in the US and international countries to formulate views on economic trends in various markets.

  • Collate data from publicly available sources to support the team.

  • Help build modeling tools to develop economic outlooks and forecast specific data points.

  • Follow geopolitical trends and become an expert on a geographic region helping socialize the team’s views on geopolitical risk.

Supporting the Insights Center’s Client Engagement

  • Support the Insights Center's development of power point presentations that are used for internal and external engagements.

  • Develop innovative new products that can help socialize the team’s views to new and perspective clients.

Internal Risk Governance

  • Work with Insights Center's leadership to to understand how various internal business units operate and how they quantify risk.

  • Based upon the overall economic and geopolitical view, discuss with units how emerging trends could affect their risk decisions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in economics, finance, or math.

  • Strong knowledge of economic principals.

  • Understanding of geopolitics and the global risk environment.

  • Team player with a strong collaborative orientation; ability to build strong relationships across an organization.

  • Entrepreneurial and creative focus to determine new work streams, initiatives, and deliverables that could be of value to internal parties and external clients.

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity in a matrixed organization; ability to guide, influence and navigate effectively with different constituencies in achieving company goals.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

  • For full-time, occasional, part-time, or remote positions: (1) high speed broadband internet service is required, we do not recommend or support DSL, wireless, Wi-Fi, Hotspots, Fiber without a modem and Satellite; (2) Internet provider supplied modem/router/gateway is hardwired to the Hartford issued computer with an ethernet cable; and (3) 100MB download/10MB upload.  Contact/Call center role using Genesys softphone and Citrix/ATO users.  Users who participate in frequent Teams video conferences, as well as those who download/upload large file content throughout the workday.

    Compensation

    The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

    $82,400 - $123,600
