Job Title:                              Associate Director, Tax Operations & Tax Compliance

Tax Operations and Tax Compliance, a newly created function within Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada Bermuda Branch will oversee the tax operations of our International Life Business covering all taxes including, Corporate Income Tax, Withholding Tax, Global Tax Reporting Regimes (FATCA, CRS) and Global Minium Tax Regimes. This role will ensure that tax returns are accurately completed and filed timely to the Bermuda Tax Authority in addition identifying tax optimization opportunities.

 

Reporting to the Controller & Head of Financial Reporting, the Associate Director of Tax Operations and Compliance will support this objective through leading our tax operations with respect to tax compliance, tax reporting, and tax advisory maintaining constant interaction with our Asia Regional Office and the Corporate Tax teams.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Tax leader with overall accountability for all of Sun Life’s Bermuda based entities.
  • Responsible for tax reporting including, tax provisioning process, reconciliations, effective tax rates, current and deferred tax accounts, and maintaining tax attributes
  • Responsible for tax risk management/compliance, including local tax and Global Minimum Tax, FATCA/CRS, and any other tax related compliance obligations
  • Responsible for tax advisory support and serving as a strategic partner to the business to identify, recommend, and implement tax effective solutions
  • Support Financial Planning & Analysis and strategic/business planning for taxes
  • Manage enquiries, tax audits, and litigation with tax authorities
  • Monitor and interpret changes to tax legislation and communicating tax considerations and operational/business impacts
  • Work with our Corporate and Regional Tax teams to develop and define effective controls for all aspects of tax operations
  • Manage and work with external tax advisors throughout the tax life cycle to effectively manage tax risks

 

Key Requirements and Skills:

  • A university degree specializing in accountancy or law
  • Relevant professional qualifications in accountancy or law
  • 10+ years of relevant tax experience gained in professional firms (Big 4 accountancy firm or law firm) or multinational financial institution
  • Familiar with Global Minimum Tax and Bermuda Corporate Income Tax and willing to develop further expertise in this area
  • Inquisitive, analytical and problem solvers able to come up with innovative solutions.
  • Strong team commitment; able to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience working in multi-cultured, multi-language and across multiple time zones is required
  • Willingness to work unusual hours, oftentimes having to liaise with other Sun Life offices after regular office hours, due to these being in other time zones.
  • Excellent communication skills; able to provide clear written and verbal communication to various levels of management.
  • Cultural awareness and openness to persons from an array of different countries and backgrounds.
