Job Summary
The Associate Director of Development plays an integral role in strengthening the philanthropic program for the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, an area with several cutting-edge clinical and research programs that depend on philanthropic support. The Associate Director will fundraise for multiple areas in the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute. The Associate Director is responsible for raising between $5M-$7M annually.Working closely with Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute faculty, AMC Development colleagues, hospital physicians, and nurses, the Associate Director will manage a portfolio of donors and will be responsible for the strategic identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gifts prospects and donors who are at various stages in their relationship with the hospital. This position reports to the Assistant Vice President of Development, Cancer Institute.
Essential Functions (Key Roles & Responsibilities)
Major Gifts
• Partner with the Assistant VP to build a prospect pipeline and actively manage a portfolio of 150 prospects at the $250k or higher and donors for assigned clinical areas.
• Conduct a minimum of 100 total donor meetings and prospect qualifications through both proactive and reactive donor identification and engagement.
• Successfully solicit a minimum of 24 $250K+ gifts (outright, life income, bequests, and gifts of assets), working with other hospital leaders, volunteers, and administrative staff as appropriate to develop and produce compelling donor proposals.
• Raise between $5M-$7M annually from new and existing donors.
• Collaborate with colleagues across fundraising teams to achieve team and overall Development Office fundraising goals.
• Create, maintain, and strengthen collaborative relationships with hospital leaders including physicians, researchers, administrative directors.
• Develop an understanding of the research, clinical, teaching, and community missions at the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute that is necessary to be an effective ambassador for programs and giving opportunities for both donors and internal colleagues.
• Develop an understanding of all giving opportunities (including planned giving and the annual fund), and cross-team disciplines.
• Prepare and regularly update progress reports.
Programmatic Support
• Partner with the Assistant VP to build and implement a comprehensive. programmatic fundraising strategy and implementation for the MGB Cancer Institute.
• Provide strategic and operational support to the Assistant VP on priority initiatives, internal communications, and cross-functional coordination.
• Help organize and facilitate key internal meetings, tracking follow-up, and ensuring accountability on deliverables.
• Support strategic planning, pipeline development, and performance tracking across the cancer fundraising portfolio.
• Lead or assist with special projects and ad hoc initiatives that advance the MGB Cancer Institute philanthropy program’s effectiveness and visibility.
Leadership-Level Cultivation & Stewardship
• Help to deepen the cultivation and stewardship of the Cancer Institute’s principal level donors.
• Assist in developing customized engagement and solicitation strategies for top cancer prospects, including grateful patients, families, and community philanthropists with interest in advancing cancer care and research.
• Manage select leadership-level donor relationships directly, serving as a trusted partner and liaison between donors and MGB Cancer Institute.
• Collaborate with stewardship and communications colleagues to deliver high-impact, personalized stewardship experiences.
• Support the design and execution of high-level donor engagement opportunities that deepen donor connection and inspire continued investment.
• Partner closely with the Transformational Strategies and Principal Gifts teams.
Qualifications
This position requires 5-7 years of fundraising or related, transferable experience and a bachelor’s degree. We are looking for someone who has a comprehensive understanding of major gifts fundraising principles and practices; knowledge of health care, demonstrated ability to build relationships both internally and with prospects and donors and solicit prospects or donors for philanthropic support. In addition, the ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Experience devising and implementing cultivation and solicitation strategies for donors at all stages of engagement, from newly identified prospects to loyal donors.
- An understanding of Campaign fundraising.
- Excellent communication and writing skills.
- Active listening skills and the ability to influence others.
- Experience managing and engaging with leadership volunteers.
- Proven ability to motivate, engage and work collaboratively with diverse audiences in a variety of situations.
