Job Description

I. Job Summary | Major goals and objectives.

Southern Living is seeking an Assistant Editor with a passion for Southern culture and food. The person will have experience in recipe development, a knowledge of Southern food and culture, and a desire to conceptualize and execute editorial ideas that provide inspiration and service to our audience. This person loves the fast-paced, ever-changing digital space and is up for any challenge.

Accountabilities, Actions and Expected Measurable Results

 

50% Pitch daily, weekly, and long-term content ideas for SouthernLiving.com
 

20% Be a thought leader in the digital food space. Manage the development and optimization of high-quality, differentiated digital food article and recipe content to drive growth through organic referral, social, email and other developing outlets

10% Focus on broadening our food coverage in the South to represent the diverse region

 

10% Seek out ways to bring everyday resources to Southern cooking in a way that can drive track from multiple platforms 

 

10% Identify foods trends or news relevant to the Southern Living audience, and create content in a timely manner

III. Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.

Education 

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field or equivalent training and/or experience.

Experience:

1-2 years experience that demonstrates exceptional writing, reporting, and researching skills. Experience with food-related content is a plus.

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Knowledge in digital media 

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Experience in working in a website cms a plus

  • Experience in writing or editing food and recipe content

  • Ability to write clear and concise recipes and instructions
