Role Overview

As an Architect Software Engineer, you are a visionary technologist responsible for defining the architectural direction of our platform while driving operational excellence across the software development lifecycle. You guide the evolution of both application and infrastructure architecture, integrating modern DevOps principles to enhance the scalability, reliability, and efficiency of our systems.

You foster best practices in system design, continuous delivery, and cloud scalability across the engineering org, while mentoring technical leaders and driving long-term architectural strategy. You partner closely with product, engineering, and platform teams to lead initiatives around CI/CD, infrastructure automation, observability, and cloud-native architecture. You own foundational architectural patterns and ensure our systems are performant, resilient, and adaptable in a modern distributed environment.

Our team is passionate, empathetic, hard working, and above all else focused on improving the lives of our service professionals (our Pros). Our success is their success.

What you do each day:

  • Architect scalable, distributed systems that integrate automation and operational efficiency from the ground up
  • Lead cross-functional technical initiatives and influence strategic decision-making at the company level
  • Lead modernization efforts including containerization, serverless architecture, and cloud-native patterns
  • Design and evolve CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code to support fast, reliable, and secure deployments
  • Collaborate with product and platform teams to define architecture standards and DevOps strategy across domains
  • Drive observability initiatives including logging, monitoring, and alerting for system reliability and incident response
  • Evaluate and implement DevOps tools and platforms to support developer productivity and platform scalability
  • Champion secure-by-design and compliance-conscious engineering practices in DevOps and deployment workflows
  • Mentor engineers across disciplines on software and DevOps architecture best practices
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement

Qualifications:

  • 12+ years of experience in software and infrastructure engineering with deep architectural expertise in large-scale systems
  • Deep proficiency in DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code (i.e. Terraform, CloudFormation)
  • Strong programming background with experience in multiple languages (i.e. Ruby, Python, Go, JavaScript)
  • Proven experience designing and operating production systems in cloud platforms (i.e. AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Proven experience with distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures
  • Experience with Kubernetes, containerization, and serverless technologies
  • Strong understanding of monitoring, alerting, and performance analysis (i.e. Prometheus, Grafana, ELK)
  • Expertise in SQL and No-SQL database technologies and performance optimization
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent work experience

What will help you succeed:

  • Strong systems thinking and ability to balance long-term architecture with immediate priorities
  • Passion for automation, operational excellence, and enabling fast delivery without sacrificing stability
  • Ability to influence and align cross-functional stakeholders with varying technical depth
  • Exceptional communication and technical storytelling to drive architectural decisions
  • Willingness to challenge the status quo and drive innovation through practical experimentation
  • Mentorship mindset with a focus on growing talent and sharing technical knowledge

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
