Responsible for multi-jurisdictional sales and use tax compliance, including return preparation and review, reconciliations, exemption certificate administration, tax research, audit and notice support, and advisory guidance. The role researches taxability, identifies risk and refund opportunities, supports tax systems and process improvements, oversees vendors, and advises cross-functional business partners on accurate transaction coding, reporting, and compliance.
This position will be domiciled at a FedEx Freight location in Memphis, TN or Harrison, AR. You will be required to work at a FedEx Freight Location several times per week.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Responsible for sales and use tax return compliance, exemption certificate administration, tax research, audit support, and indirect tax advisory matters to ensure accurate reporting, reduce tax risk, and support business operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinate and review timely monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns in assigned jurisdictions using transaction data, compliance calendars, enterprise resource planning reports, and internal workpapers
- Reconcile return data to tax accounts, investigate variances, document adjustments, and support use tax accruals to help ensure accurate company reporting and compliance with state and local requirements
- Oversee sales tax bills and payments, reconcile assessments and payments to tax accounts, and monitor deadlines
- Research statutes, regulations, administrative guidance, tax authority publications, and internal policies to determine taxability of products, services, transportation charges, leases, software, technology purchases, and other company transactions
- Prepare written conclusions and provide practical guidance to procurement, accounts payable, legal, finance, information technology, sales, and operations teams so transactions are coded, billed, and reported correctly
- Research opportunities for exemptions provided on a state/local level and incorporate into self-assessment procedures. Maintain exemption deployment through collaboration with procurement teams and tracking benefits
- Oversee third party vendor’s inputs and deliverables to identify potential opportunities for in-sourcing
- Identify recurring filing, certificate, billing, purchasing, or tax coding issues and recommend changes to procedures, controls, templates, and reporting logic
- Support the maintenance and testing of tax determination systems, compliance tools, data queries, and enterprise resource planning tax fields to improve accuracy and efficiency
- Gather invoices, exemption certificates, transaction data, account reconciliations, and supporting research in response to state and local tax audits, notices, refund reviews, and information requests
- Analyze proposed assessments, quantify potential exposure or refund opportunities, draft responses, and recommend resolution alternatives for review by management
- Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Business, or a related field required.
- Five (5) years of relevant sales and use tax or indirect tax experience.
- Demonstrated experience with sales and use tax return compliance, exemption certificate review, taxability research, account reconciliations, and audit or notice support required.
- Practical experience preparing or reviewing multi-jurisdictional sales and use tax returns, administering exemption certificates, researching state and local tax issues, supporting tax audits and notices, reconciling tax accounts, and advising business partners.
- Certified Public Accountant license, Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation designation, Master of Taxation degree, or progress toward one of these credentials preferred.
- Ability to demonstrate sound judgment, attention to detail, strong written communication, effective stakeholder management, and the ability to work independently on recurring compliance and moderately complex advisory matters.
- Strong Microsoft Excel, data analysis, and written communication with internal/external parties.
- Strong project management skills to manage internal and external teams in meeting timely filing and payment requirements.
