The Early Preclinical Development team is seeking a PhD level scientist at the Advisor level, preferably with experience in inner ear histology to support animal studies from discovery to IND-enabling stages. The candidate will report to the Senior Director of Histology and will work closely with a team of scientists aiming to develop genetic medicines. The scope of work includes but is not limited to the execution of in vivo and ex vivo experiments in mice and/or non-human primates (NHPs). The successful candidate will be self-motivated, creative, and scientifically agile, with a desire to succeed at the highest level in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Execute in vivo and/or ex vivo nonclinical experiments for the development of gene therapies for the inner ear:
- Perform histologic preparations of mouse and NHP inner ear tissue, including whole-mount dissections or cryosections and immunohistochemistry
- Perform epifluorescent and confocal microscopy
- Perform necropsies and/or tissue harvest from mice and inner ear tissue harvest from NHPs
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of activities through meticulous lab notebook practices and contributions to technical and nonclinical study reports
- Collaborate with external partners/CRO to initiate new studies and occasionally travel to CRO to coordinate and monitor studies
- Analyze, interpret, and present histology data for projects, with the ability to clearly communicate results in written and oral formats; may need to incorporate data from other functions in the EPD team to interpret data
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and external groups to support scientific strategy and to coordinate, drive, and provide written and oral communication of results from complex studies
- Provide training and guidance to scientific staff and scientists
Basic Qualifications:
- PhD in neuroscience, molecular, cellular biology, or related scientific field and a minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience working in a laboratory environment; biotech, or biopharma industry preferred
Additional Skills/Preferences:
- Proven ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary, matrixed team and contribute to a highly collaborative environment
- Highly creative, organized, and detail-oriented
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to thoroughly document, interpret, and effectively present scientific data to other scientists
- Excellent computer skills and Microsoft Products proficiency (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Experience with epifluorescent and confocal microscopy
- Knowledge of cochlear anatomy, cochlear microdissection (whole-mount or sections), and methods for histological preparation of inner ear tissues preferred
- Experience with coding preferred (Amira, Imaris, Python, MATLAB, R, Igor, and/or LabView)

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is
$133,500 - $217,800Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
