The Lynn advanced programs (AP) section is a brand-new organization with the mission of inventing the future of flight and advancing propulsion capability for the next generation of military applications. Lynn AP supports a wide range of engineering activity including design, analysis, and testing across new, derivative, and existing engines.
The advanced lead mechanical design engineer will be the fan blade hardware owner, responsible for execution of mechanical design and development of the multiple fan stages as part of the fan module team. In this role, the advanced lead engineer will utilize engineering experience to solve problems and recommend technical solutions partnering with teammates and technical experts. This role is best suited for a collaborative problem solver with a desire to deepen their fan rotor airfoil mechanical design expertise and develop new solutions to challenging technical problems. Effectively working with teammates and peers in adjacent organizations will be necessary for successful project execution to impact short-term and long-term business goals.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Execute the design and analysis of the fan rotor airfoils by applying engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements with limited guidance from experienced teammates and technical experts. Properly document technical data generated.
  • Develop specialized knowledge of rotor airfoil design utilizing physics-based 3D dynamic transient analysis to characterize and control the complex airfoil behavior. Stay current with the latest technical developments and internal processes.
  • Partner with internal teams and external vendors to facilitate hardware manufacture and procurement
  • Provide timely communication if significant issues or challenges arise. Identify and evaluate options to resolve and recommend the best solution and rationale. Contribute to action plan development to resolve challenges when required
  • Prepare and present technical data along with recommendations or conclusions to internal and external customer audiences. Participate as peer reviewer for less experienced team members during internal reviews.
  • Deepen understanding of competitors and the factors that differentiate designs or products
  • Lead small projects within the fan module balancing moderate risk and resource requirements. Generate project plans to manage design execution.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in relevant design engineering position
  • Due to the nature of the duties of this position, this role requires the individual to obtain and maintain US Government Security Clearance; prerequisite for a security clearance is U.S. citizenship.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited college or university
  • 5-7 years of experience in relevant mechanical design engineering position
  • Active US government security clearance at the Secret level
  • Experience in design, analysis, and manufacturing of high-precision or turbomachinery components
  • Expertise with finite element analysis software such as ANSYS 
  • Proficiency with 3D Modeling software, preferably Unigraphics/NX
  • Experience with GD&T principles and reading or creating drawings
  • Passion for the aviation industry and advancing the state-of-the-art
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills in-person and across geographic sites
  • Ability to influence others and lead small teams
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, analyze, and resolve problems
  • Project management skills with ability to organize and prioritize effort with some guidance
