Our Opportunity:
Chewy is dedicated to being the most trusted and convenient online destination for pet parents and partners, everywhere. On the Product Design and Research team, we embrace this vision (and our pets!). We craft experiences that delight customers, veterinarians, and businesses that support them in keeping their pets happy and healthy. As a team of hard-working, collaborative, and fun-loving designers, researchers, and builders, we're looking for creative and driven talent to join the pack.
We are looking for an Associate Director, Product Design - Design Systems & Content Design to lead our Platform design teams, based in either our Boston, MA or Bellevue, WA offices. You will work closely with partners across brand, merchandising, and site experience teams to deliver a dynamic, ever-evolving platform that delights millions of pet parents. This is more than a design leadership role - it is your chance to shape the voice, standards, and systems behind one of the most beloved names in pet care.

  • Lead innovative, systems-level thinking across a range of products, platforms, and devices.
  • Champion cohesion and consistency across a growing portfolio of products, while encouraging a culture of innovation.

Execution & Delivery

  • Maintain a bias for action and prioritize across multiple initiatives.

Team Leadership & Growth
  • Lead and develop a high-performing design team, ensuring they are engaged, effective, and continuously growing.
  • Champion Chewy's culture and principles, setting new standards for operational and executional excellence.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner closely with product managers, developers, content strategists, user researchers, and fellow designers.
  • Clearly articulate and present design thinking, process, and decisions to a wide range of Team Members, including senior leadership and C-suite executives.

What You'll Need:
Design Experience & Expertise
  • 7+ years of experience as a user experience designer, interaction designer, information architect, or similar role.
  • Advanced proficiency in core design, including interaction design, information architecture, and user interface design.
  • Consistently crafting high-quality digital products that deliver measurable results, supported by a strong portfolio or case studies.

Leadership & Team Management
  • 4+ years of experience managing multidisciplinary teams, including researchers, content strategists, and product designers.
  • Ability to evaluate both customer and business impact of design decisions across product areas.
  • Ability to lead large scale initiatives involving multiple Team Members groups

Communication & Collaboration
  • Strong communication, presentation, and social skills.
  • Ability to clearly articulate complex concepts to diverse audiences and Team Members at all levels.

Education & Work Environment
  • Bachelor's degree in design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or a related field-or equivalent professional experience in the design industry.
  • Ability to travel quarterly as needed; role requires regular presence in a local office.

Preferred Qualifications:
Leadership & Team Management
  • Experience leading teams of 10+ including leading other managers.

Content Design & Systems Thinking
  • Background in content design or design systems, with a track record of developing standards adopted across an organization.
  • Experience building and supporting design frameworks through clear guidance and team enablement.

Industry Experience
  • Background in e-commerce, retail brands, or merchandising environments, with an understanding of customer behavior and business goals in those contexts.

Work Arrangement:
  • Hybrid Model: 3 days in hub location per week
