Anyone who has tried to assemble a furniture set can tell you that the instruction manuals could often use clarification. The instruction manual gets much more complicated, however, when you’re learning the ins and outs of a complex piece of machinery.

Boston tech company Canvas GFX has developed software that helps manufacturers teach their employees and product users how to operate a piece of machinery with interactive digital instructions.

Canvas GFX recently announced that it will scale its solution with the help of a $9 million Series A-1 funding round co-led by ECoast Angels and Mendoza Ventures.

Canvas GFX’s Canvas Envision software allows manufacturers to blend 2D illustrations, 3D model animations and audio and video content to create an interactive learning experience for their employees and product users. The digital instructions can be integrated into a company’s existing product lifecycle management, or PLM, software, along with other systems.

Canvas Envision is used by major clients like Anduril Industries, a developer of autonomous defense solutions, as well as automated logistics provider Zipline and transit systems manufacturer Amsted Rail.

In addition to the funding news, Canvas GFX also announced that Peter Schroer, the founder of PLM platform Aras, was named chairman of the company’s board of directors.

“Canvas Envision delivers a unique set of capabilities for which there is clear market demand,” Schroer said in a statement. “For many manufacturing companies, critical documentation such as work instructions, MRO manuals and training materials are created and delivered in ways that are inefficient, outdated and detrimental to the wider company performance. I am delighted to be joining the Canvas journey and I look forward to helping the company achieve its clear potential.”
