Going from a job that is mundane to one that is filled with purpose and passion is a little like switching from watching a grainy TV set to wearing immersive VR glasses: It takes the experience to a whole new level.
Just ask Senior Customer Success Manager Angela Mitchell at Hi Marley. She came into the job with insurance experience, but after seeing that the culture at Hi Marley was all about helping people, she got to see her expertise come into even clearer focus through purpose-driven work.
“Making insurance lovable and being a trusted contact in everyone’s pocket may seem idealistic, but everyone at Hi Marley is working toward that goal in their own ways and each team contributes to our mission,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell is in the minority. Gallup found that, as of 2024, only 30 percent of employees feel connected to their company’s mission or purpose.
Fortunately, the senior customer success manager is not alone. Read on to learn about two local companies growing their mission-driven teams.

Hi Marley creates a conversational platform built for P&C insurance and is powered by SMS.
Tell us about your company’s mission. How does that mission influence the company culture? Did that mission impact your decision to join the team?
Hi Marley’s mission, “to empower insurance to communicate simply, build trust and protect what people love,” is what drew me to work here.
Before joining Hi Marley, I spent 14 years working as a property and casualty insurer. When our company adopted Hi Marley, it transformed the way we processed claims and eliminated frustrating pain points. I experienced firsthand how Hi Marley solved the specific daily challenges claim professionals face and helped us feel supported. It was clear that the platform was designed by insurance professionals for insurance professionals.
I love insurance and also wanted to be part of the solution to help remove friction, frustration and confusion in the claim process. I believe that if we can’t educate the world about the claims process before they have a claim, then the next best thing is to enable adjusters to communicate simply and provide clarity when that time comes.
Hi Marley employees see the value in insurance and want to make the industry more lovable. You can feel in our culture that we’re all here because we recognize that insurance is a challenging industry to work in, but we believe in it and want to make the experience better for our customers.
“You can feel in our culture that we’re all here because we recognize that insurance is a challenging industry to work in, but we believe in it and want to make the experience better for our customers.”
From your perspective, how does your work connect to the overall company mission?
My work connects to our overall mission when I meet with my carriers. I want to know about their adjusters’ experiences with the platform, including what they like, but more importantly, areas for improvement. We want our users to feel like their jobs are easier when they introduce Hi Marley into their workflows. If they aren’t feeling that relief, I want to work with them so they can experience all the benefits of the platform.
The adjuster role is challenging and as a customer success manager, I want to make sure I’m doing my part to make them feel supported, heard and cared for. For example, we recently hosted Hi Marley’s first Adjuster Day, bringing together power users from local carriers for a day of connection, learning and well-earned recognition. We created the day dedicated to adjusters to celebrate the positive impact they make on the lives of policyholders.
It was another step toward making insurance lovable, investing in adjusters and ensuring they feel valued for their work. It also gave them an opportunity to meet the Hi Marley team and know that people are working to make their jobs easier, better and more fulfilling.

Wasabi Technologies is a cloud storage company that aims to make data storage affordable, predictable and secure.
Tell us about your company’s mission. How does that mission influence the company culture? Did that mission impact your decision to join the team?
Wasabi’s mission as a company is to provide cloud storage for the world’s data. This mission was set forth by David Friend and Jeff Flowers, Wasabi’s founders, as a business, but their startup energy has turned cloud storage from a practical business need into a company where people are excited for one another and the overall team’s successes. I joined when Wasabi had just around 200 employees and we have nearly tripled in the past four years. The culture’s incredibly positive vibe has continued throughout the company’s growth.
“... their startup energy has turned cloud storage from a practical business need into a company where people are excited for one another and the overall team’s successes.”
From your perspective, how does your work connect to the overall company mission?
My role at Wasabi has a direct connection to the company’s H.O.T. culture values (humility, ownership and togetherness) and the mission of selling cloud storage. My work on sponsorship events — showcasing our brand is in the fabric of my day-to-day job — and as a corporate events planner, working each year to put on a well-thought-out, engaging and productive sales kickoff year after year, provide opportunities for our sales teams to become energized to continue to grow the company.
What advice would you give a jobseeker hoping to join your company?
Be open to being surprised. Wasabi is not like other companies; we celebrate our individual and collective successes. If you are someone that wants to expand your personal horizons and work with a team that consistently gets better, then get ready to level up!
