Within the last year, Robert Downey Jr.’s venture capital firm Footprint Coalition has been investing millions across at least 10 startups that focus on climate and food tech innovation, according to Crunchbase data.

The most recent startup to pull in funds from the firm is Boston-based Motif FoodWorks, a food technology startup that produces ingredients to make plant-based foods taste better.

The raise, announced on Wednesday, did not disclose how much Footprint Coalition invested, but did state the firm and the startup will partner on the development of new forms of plant-based foods.

“If plant-based foods are going to make a real impact on sustainability, we need an approach that’s both delicious and nutritious,” Robert Downey Jr., founder of FootPrint Coalition Ventures said in a statement. “By focusing on both better tasting and healthier options, Motif is not only making a difference in products today, but reimagining the future of tomorrow’s plant-based foods.”

Built In last caught up with Motif when the startup raised $226 million in its Series B funding round back in June 2021. The plan then was to accelerate its product offerings, expand its facilities and hire an additional 50 employees.

Now, according to a company statement, the investment from Footprint Coalition will go to the “development of new-to-the-world plant-based food forms.” Additionally, the startup has a particular focus on offering its newly-developed alternative beef, pork and chicken products to food service providers, distributors and retailers with private labels.

While there are no set plans on using its fresh funds aside to hire, Motif does have seven job openings at the moment, all of which are based in Boston.
