Weather intelligence platform Tomorrow.io received a $19.3 million contract from the U.S. Air Force to develop a constellation of weather satellites that will provide three-dimensional weather and ocean data.

This global environmental data is “essential to effective mission planning and execution of air and ground operations,” John Dreher, the weather systems branch chief at Hanscom Air Force Base, said in a statement.

The constellation, which is expected to launch in late 2022, is expected to provide the first-ever global precipitation dataset updated hourly, along with other weather and ocean data.

Boasting big-name clients like Uber, Ford and Delta, Tomorrow.io uses machine learning to translate hyperlocal forecasts into actionable insights that allow businesses and organizations to proactively address climate-related challenges.

The company changed its name away from ClimaCell last year when it raised $77 million in Series D financing. The company has raised more than $185 million since it was founded in 2015.

The company said in December that it planned to go public via a SPAC merger with Pine Technology Acquisition Corp. The pro-forma equity value of the combined company is about $1.2 billion. Tomorrow.io expects to receive up to $420 million in gross transaction proceeds, assuming no redemptions when the merger is complete in the first half of the year.
