Datto is seeking a Hardware Systems Engineer to join our growing team. The computational problems we solve are so unique that we cannot purchase off the shelf hardware, we must research, design, and build it ourselves! So if you have experience with server efficiency, evaluating performance in a heavily virtualized environment, and the processor requirements for managing large data sets, Datto has a job for you!

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Design and test new computer hardware; analyzing test results and modifying the designs as needed
  • Prepare engineering documentation; schematics, models, 3D designs, assembly and test procedures, bill of materials etcetera
  • Collect, analyze and present statistical data regarding system and component performance
  • Oversee the manufacturing relationships to ensure proper and accurate delivery
  • Analyze existing systems to identify flaws and inefficiencies
  • Make modifications to existing systems, by evaluating and suggesting new components, layouts and designs to increase efficiency

  • Design, develop, and modify electronic circuitry, subsystems, enclosures, or other hardware elements of products/systems
  • Develop and conduct functional and environmental (thermal, electromagnetic compatibility, etc.) verification and validation tests of new designs or modified existing designs to evaluate circuit and hardware performance against internal and external quality requirements
  • Investigate root cause and establish corrective actions for product and process failures
  • Maintain current knowledge regarding new developments and trends in applicable engineering area

Qualifications:

  • BS Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering
  • At least five years of applicable professional software and hardware experience
  • Ability to:
    • Analyze complex equipment to determine the best way to improve it
    • Design new types of information technology devices
    • Use logic and reasoning to clarify goals, examine assumptions, and identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems
    • Identify complex problems in computer hardware, develop and evaluate possible solutions, and figure out the best way to implement them
    • Working and collaborating with various PC component manufacturers to design new systems and retrofit older ones to ensure quality/consistent performance
    • Communicate with Hardware manufacturers to express needs and concerns of products
    • Create and manage Hardware BOM’s with necessary components and alternate suppliers
    • Communicate with Build Team to ensure product accuracy and consistency

  • Knowledge of:
    • Basic components of computing system
    • PCIe, MSATA, SAS, NAND
    • Multiple Phase AC power and DC power systems
    • Linux 
    • O-Scope, DMM, Spectrum analyzer, DAQ

  • Understanding of RAID levels and/or understanding of data redundancy
  • Experience with PHP, Python, C/C++, or bash a plus
