As an Industrial Project Engineer on the Internal Manufacturing Team you will be responsible for facility expansion and scalability, industrial equipment installation, lean material flow, and workcell design to help us scale to the next level.  In this role you will collaborate with engineering teams to continuously improve, optimize, and expand our material manufacturing operation utilizing best practices such as Production Preparation Planning (3P), Theory of Constraints, balanced work cells, etc.  If you embrace a fail-fast innovative mindset and always look for ways to implement advanced manufacturing technologies then this is the role for you. This role is critical to ensure Markforged materials maintain high quality standards and exceed customer expectations.

You will report to the Engineering Manager and will make a strong addition to our growing manufacturing team of mechanical, electrical, quality, and reliability engineers.  The ideal candidate exhibits exceptional communication, displays a positive attitude, has a natural aptitude toward project management, and excels in industrial and/or process engineering. This individual must be self-motivated, able to handle multiple project assignments, and be willing to learn and adapt within a fast-paced engineering organization.

What will you own?

  • Design and implement LEAN solutions that improve labor utilization, material flow, operational efficiency, statistical process control, and plant-level metrics (yield, throughput, scrape rate, etc.)
  • Achieve results by conducting process optimization studies, generating value stream maps, drafting detailed work cell layouts, and producing high quality engineering documentation
  • Constantly identify improvement opportunities that can be streamlined via advanced manufacturing methods, robotic/sensor applications, and automation solutions
  • Assess future capability and capacity of plant processing equipment to make formal cost/benefit recommendations to leadership on proposed capital investments and facility expansion plans
  • Drive project schedules to achieve key deliverables and project milestones that meet higher level business objectives and timelines
  • Identify and communicate on project risks early and often, develop contingency / mitigation plans, and confidently report progress to manufacturing leadership
  • Work closely and cooperatively with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Operations teams to ensure alignment and success throughout the project/product life-cycle.
  • Perform equipment acceptance and validation testing, manage engineering change records (ECO), and coordinate production cut-ins

Important Note:

Although we list out what we generally look for, we are very likely missing other attributes and skills that you have that could make you a great fit, but are not currently listed. Research has shown this especially applies to women and other marginalized groups, who tend to apply if they check 100% of every box, versus men who apply if they hit roughly 60%. The point we’re getting at, it doesn’t hurt to take a chance and apply!

What you have:

  • Passion for manufacturing, automation and continuous improvement
  • Very knowledgeable in manufacturing principles such as LEAN, Kaizen, Gemba, 5S, and Six Sigma.
  • Demonstrated experience with developing, owning and executing plant layout roadmaps using tools such as Production Preparation Planning (3P) to ensure lean material flow and scalability.
  • Experience with production equipment installation planning and coordination.
  • Experience planning and managing plant expansion construction projects.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, MiniTab, 3D modelling, technical drawings and engineering schematics.  Solidworks / PLM CAD experience a plus
  • Experience working with manufacturing SCADA systems (such as Ignition)
  • Sharp analytical and industrial mindset with a desire to apply them toward real-world manufacturing problems
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve equipment reliability/performance issues on a production line (prior experience or expertise with industrial extrusions/oven equipment a plus)
  • Can successfully led cross-functional projects to completion
  • 3-5 years of relevant industrial engineering work experience in a continuous manufacturing environment
  • Bachelor's degree in related engineering discipline (Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering preferred) or 10+ years of relevant work experience
