The Opportunity:
Corporate Development is an exciting, dynamic group at athenahealth focused on driving strategic partnerships and acquisitions that unlock growth for the organization. The team plays a core role in executing on athenahealth’s ongoing corporate strategy, identifying and pursuing collaborative opportunities with disruptive technologies and business models within the health care industry. These opportunities help drive large strategic initiatives for the firm, including expansion into key growth markets and accelerating critical product or service initiatives.
Position Summary:

As a Director within the team, you will act as a trusted advisor to the company’s leadership team in (1) developing strategy, (2) working with the appropriate business stakeholders to define, assess, champion and quarterback execution of strategic partnerships and transactions, including acquisitions, strategic investments, divestitures, and other complex transactions and (3) ensuring continuity and achievement of project objectives through strategy development, transaction execution, and integration.
The Director position is for someone who possess extraordinary leadership skills, as you will lead large, complex teams through often ambiguous and rapidly moving situations. You must exhibit strong interpersonal and communication skills in collaborating with and influencing key business leadership and technology thought-leaders, as you drive ideas to outcomes. This will require experience, as well as transparency and alignment across a diverse range of stakeholders. The role is best suited for someone who is highly detail-oriented, is resourceful and proactive, exhibits outstanding judgment and professionalism, and thrives in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment. It is a great opportunity to be involved in strategy and evaluation of business and M&A opportunities, and will require the right competencies to drive deals through due diligence, structuring, modeling, and integration planning. A strong understanding of athenahealth, the healthcare industry, and building strong, collaborative relationships internally within the organization will be critical to success. We are seeking an individual who has experience in corporate development, corporate, investment banking, private equity, management consulting, or a similar field. The right candidate should possess a strong understanding of athenahealth’s core business functions and products, be able to comfortably interact with target companies in our pipeline, and be able to foster and maintain the necessary internal relationships for operational and integration efforts post-transaction.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate primarily with Division and business unit leadership and other key team members to align strategic priorities to inorganic execution ideas, exercising judgment to determine the best ideas for execution, and driving to closure
  • Drive evaluation of new strategic partnerships and acquisitions
  • Lead transaction teams and drive end-to-end deal execution, including due diligence, modeling, negotiation, and integration planning
  • Conducting deep-dive research on new growth markets
  • Develop and maintain business relationships with potential partners or acquisition targets
  • Drive deal execution and coordination between key internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide financial analysis, long-range forecasting and analysis studies associated with potential partnerships and M&A deals
  • Coordinate and collaborate with product, legal, finance and other teams within athena to support the successful completion of transactions

Team Management
Defines roles and responsibilities of direct reports

  • Sets and monitors annual performance goals & objectives, including responsibility for performance appraisals
  • Responsible for development of direct reports, by identifying training needs and providing training and/or development opportunities
  • Recommends or initiates personnel action

Education, Experience, & Skills Required

  • BA or BS required; MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 8+ years’ experience in tech focused corporate development, investment banking, management consulting, or another similar field;
  • Tenure of deal execution, from diligence, negotiations, through to close;
  • Well versed in a variety of partnership models (OEM, reseller, joint venture etc.)
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and prioritization abilities;
  • Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills required;
  • Demonstrated industry acumen and passion for making health care work as it should;
  • Financial modeling, valuation, and strategic analysis experience required a plus;
  • Comfort in a faced-paced, dynamic environment;
  • Healthcare experience preferred;

  • Comfortable with ambiguity and the ability to create structure out of chaos
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, able to jump into complex situations quickly, bridge gaps, and drive towards a solution with a willingness to do whatever is necessary to achieve success
