Job Description
BookBub is looking for an experienced leader to head up all consumer marketing and engagement for the company. The person who fills this newly-created position will report directly to the CEO, become a member of the organization’s executive team, and take over leadership of multiple departments that currently consist of ~25 people and include consumer marketing, content, and support. The position’s main focus will be to continue accelerating the rapid growth in the number and engagement of consumers who use BookBub, and to grow the expertise and size of their teams to support these goals.
Here’s a sample of what the person who fills this role would expect to accomplish with their departments in their first year in this position:
- Significantly grow new members joining BookBub: Drive investments in SEO, virality, content marketing, and other growth initiatives within the department and in collaboration with our product team; identify new paid marketing opportunities and improve existing advertising channels to keep growing new members.
- Increase average engagement in new and existing products: Educate members about various features and promote adoption; develop personas and solicit reader feedback to identify innovations and messaging improvements; invest in content and initiatives that drive additional engagement and retention.
- Broaden consumer perception of BookBub from deals to discovery: Get the vast majority of current and potential members seeing our original ebook deals product as just one of many ways to discover books via BookBub.
- Develop the team, and empower it to hit goals and maintain operations: Lead, mentor, and professionally grow the team, working especially close with managers reporting into them to accomplish goals and keep operations running smoothly.
- Grow department where there are expertise needs: Work with managers to hire an additional 5 to 10 people across their teams to fulfill needs of the company as it grows, especially increasing expertise in product marketing, activation, and retention.
- Become a leader across the organization: Help with and evangelize marketing best practices beyond just consumer areas; also share general management wisdom and shape company culture and operations as a member of the leadership team.
Qualifications
Ideal candidates for the position will have the following experiences and skills:
- Superior general management skills: Demonstrated leadership of converting broad top-level goals into specific prioritized initiatives and processes, and empowering their team to achieve them; an ability to learn and manage areas outside of core expertise, collaborate with other departments, and help drive significant change
- Excellent people management skills: A history of successfully hiring, training, and onboarding people who hit goals; years of running large teams that include managers of managers; deep experience professionally growing members of their team
- Experienced consumer instincts: A developed understanding of consumer psychology and an ability to anticipate likely behavior and reactions around messaging and products before testing; successful experience and frameworks for leading decisions around copy, landing pages, branding, voice, and aesthetics that resonate with consumers
- Deep analytic, research, and thesis testing skills: Countless experiences of validating consumer behavior hypotheses with surveys, qualitative interviews, a/b testing, consumer data analysis, etc; able to articulate and evangelize best practices in these areas as well as with funnel analysis, segmentation, and persona establishment
- Consumer growth marketing experience: Significant experience with various methods of growing an online consumer member base (and measuring ROI), ranging from digital advertising, PR, SEO, virality, social media, content marketing, traditional advertising, brand building, etc.; a deep understanding of which work best in various situations
- Significant consumer product marketing skills: Well versed in techniques for driving adoption of new products and increasing average consumer engagement via improved activation, education, community management, and retention initiatives; experience collaborating with product/design to improve products based on user feedback; knowledge of email marketing techniques like inbox placement, client compatibility, etc
- Related industry domain expertise: Experience and understanding around media, two-sided markets, and ecommerce businesses is helpful, specifically experience in a venture-backed tech startup or other high-growth organization; an appreciation of books, being a book reader, and familiarity with the publishing industry are a plus
- Relevant educational experience: A degree in marketing, business, or general management (ideally an MBA) or equivalent professional experience
