The Opportunity
This position is a key controllership role responsible for leading a team that manages and executes investment transactional accounting and analysis, including oversight of financial reporting outcomes of all MassMutual investment products. This position resides within the Controllers Organization of Corporate Finance which aspires to be best in class financial stewards for MassMutual. The Team
The Investment controllership team is a high-profile team in the controller's organization and is currently comprised of five mastery level accountants who oversee our various asset classes and investment activity. Our team has a high business acumen and is driven to provide timely and accurate financial information to our customers and be an agile and reliable source of information in the organization. We strive to continuously improve by working together as team to make each other and our process better. The team continues to grow due to the growing level of assets and number of projects and initiatives that we are part of.

This strategic leader will exhibit strong leadership presence and communications skills in presenting results to various levels of management. This will require thought leadership and entail developing sound accounting practices, efficient processes, and robust control documentation to effectively deliver timely and insightful results. This individual will be proactive in developing team vision & strategy, driving change and transformation of our accounting capabilities, and executing on projects effectively and efficiently. This leader will play a key role in actively managing team performance and developing talent within the investment accounting team and the broader Controllers community. This leader demonstrates the technical and leadership competencies and passion for continuous improvement to be considered a strong successor candidate.
The Impact:
- Proactively identifies financial reporting risks and opportunities within the investment activities and translates that into decision-useful improvement recommendations –
- Provides sound financial advice to business units or other departments, anticipating the financial statement impact of changes in the business environment and making recommendations to ensure appropriate processes are implemented and maintained -
- Understands how data flows through the financial systems to the accounting function, planning appropriately for changes and prioritizing and implementing enhancements -
- Establish and enhance internal controls and maintain and consistently improve upon a strong control environment within the investment accounting activities - Accountability
- Adds value to the enterprise through close collaboration and partnership with other MassMutual business units and corporate functions to ensure the accurate, timely and efficient submission of data and analysis required to meet reporting requirements –
- Plays a key role in creating a collaborative and inclusive culture by working closely with other Controllers teams, such as the financial close team and external reporting to ensure the accurate recognition of accounting for various transactions and events related to the investment processes and activities -
- Drives accountability by collaborating with accounting policy and other areas within the Controllers Organization on the evaluation of new GAAP and statutory reporting impacts to the company; assisting in the implementation of new business financial reporting impacting the investment processes –
- Contributes to the reporting of the companies strategic entity investments and managing the investment side of the reinsurance agreements
The Minimum Qualifications
- BS in accounting or finance; MBA or equivalent preferred
- Certified Public Accountant
- 8 years of relevant experience from public accounting and/or large insurance organization
- Significant knowledge and experience of US GAAP and statutory investment accounting
The Ideal Qualifications
- Strong multi-tasking skills and ability to adapt to change
- Ability to proactively take ownership of projects and drive them through to completion
- Experience working in a Finance transformational setting; driving change and managing competing priorities
- In-depth knowledge of US GAAP and Statutory accounting
- Ability to perform and lead a team to perform independent research and prepare analyses of the impact of accounting requirements
- Experience in best-in-class control execution/documentation
- Detail-oriented with demonstrated oral and written communication skills
