POSITION SUMMARY:

MassMutual is seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to lead MassMutual's sustainability efforts, including coordination of investment, environmental, social and governance components. Responsibilities include building out and further developing existing sustainability strategy, syndicating, and implementing change, as well as communicating and engaging with senior management, employees and external stakeholders.

To help us achieve our mission, we are seeking a Head of Sustainability. This role will report to MassMutual's Chief Risk Officer who is also the executive sponsor of the sustainability program, and will be located in Boston, MA.

What great looks like in this role

Our ideal Head of Sustainability candidate is a strategic leader with an ability to inspire and influence others to adopt and drive forward the sustainability strategy and integrate it into everything we do at MassMutual. This candidate will have a passion for ESG topics, and experience leading change. ?Measures of success will include;

- guiding MassMutual in setting aspirational goals and ensuring that a roadmap exists to achieve these, then measuring and reporting progress,

- ?effective communication, internal and external, around our sustainability strategy, including coordinating an employee engagement strategy which achieves a cultural shift towards alignment with MassMutual's commitment to sustainability,

- increasing public and stakeholder perceptions and reputation, ensuring continuing authenticity in MassMutual commitment to sustainability.

 

OBJECTIVES OF THIS ROLE

 

Strategic:

  • Assess and build upon MassMutual's current sustainability strategy; develop and communicate a comprehensive sustainability vision and operating principles, and lead the evolution of the strategy to support them; drive the setting of aspirational sustainability goals, identifying and syndicating the prioritization of key initiatives,
  • Collaborate to ensure a consistent, coherent representation of MassMutual's aggregate ESG positioning and policy positioning; coordinate and collaborate with MassMutual's subsidiaries and affiliates to ensure consistency and alignment??
  • Provide regular updates to MassMutual's Executive Leadership Team, Board of Directors, and other key stakeholders as required

 

Internal:

  • Secure and leverage senior level commitment and support for integrating sustainable development into core processes and decision-making throughout the organization; Collaborate with leaders across key areas of the company (e.g. Investment Management, HR, Facilities, Community Responsibility, Brand, Products, Finance, Legal, Government Relations, Public Policy, Corporate Strategy, etc) to coordinate the integration of the sustainability strategy across MassMutual's businesses.
  • Collaborate in building sustainability principles and targets into short and long-range business and operations planning. ?Measure and monitor progress against sustainability strategies, goals and performance targets, developing evaluation systems as required.
  • Maintain awareness of the external sustainability environment, researching and monitoring emerging trends, programs and issues, and stakeholder concerns, and communicating and educating others.
  • Foster a culture of sustainability through collaboration, ongoing organizational communications, education and engagement. Create and implement communication strategies to publicize the company's sustainability efforts and promote broad awareness of sustainability initiatives, both internally and externally as required.
  • Ensure robust governance through a cross-functional sustainability committee of senior executives; drive its agenda and develop materials; develop internal sustainability policies as needed
  • Serve as the internal leader and ?go to? expert for sustainability topics,
  • Periodically evaluate the effectiveness of the sustainability program

 

External:

  • Review external best practices and seek/propose opportunities to ensure that MassMutual is well positioned and positively differentiated from peers; maintain awareness of current and evolving sustainability/ environmental standards or regulations, and ensure compliance where appropriate
  • Maintain awareness of ESG reporting standards, syndicate appropriate choices, and coordinate the production of external reporting; coordinate with Brand/Marketing and other stakeholders to create MassMutual's annual sustainability report ensuring differentiated and compelling content; respond as needed to client and stakeholder enquiries and information requests
  • Be MassMutual's external sustainability ambassador, coordinating with Brand/Marketing and Strategic Communications; cultivate relationships with various ESG organizations as appropriate
  • Collaborate with the Public Policy and Government Relations functions in developing policy positions which enable MassMutual to be active and authentic in driving climate action and helping shape the US climate agenda

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of experience in corporate sustainability or other ESG role preferred
  • Familiarity with ESG reporting standards, ESG organizations, and ESG reporting
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent is required; advanced degree/certificates highly preferred
  • CFA and/or investment experience preferred
  • Demonstrated success in leading and driving solutions involving multiple stakeholders and layers of management, and multiple simultaneous deliverables
  • Thrives when facing ambiguity and complexity; willingness to explore multiple solutions to a problem
  • Highly effective critical thinker who can synthesize information from disparate sources and recommend appropriate management action
  • Compelling communicator, both written and verbal, effective at presenting to all levels of the organization
  • Strong leadership skills; ability to engage and inspire; fosters a sense of energy, ownership, and personal commitment to the work; create an environment in which performance excellence is rewarded
  • Experience influencing and advising on a wide range of complex ESG issues
  • Ability to listen, but also to persuasively convey opinions and recommendations
  • Excels at leading through ambiguous situations or for activities not directly associated with well-defined responsibilities
  • Strong matrix management skills; proven success in managing cross functional teams
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work with others, influence key stakeholders and lead sustainability-related discussions
