The Opportunity
As the Head of Debt Financing, Management and Liquidity you will work in a fast paced, innovative and collaborative environment enhancing our credit/financing and liquidity opportunities. The role will be responsible for developing banking relationships, managing their associated balance of trade with a focus on optimizing impacts enterprise wide; actively participate in the management of MassMutual's capital, and play an integral role in the build out of a new Treasury Management System. You will:
- Lead the creation of policies and effectively manage total company liquidity
- Actively engage in evaluating and obtaining optimal financing solutions
- Identify, buildout, optimize and cascade all banking relationships company-wide
- Actively participate in supporting the company execution of its strategic plan
This role is an opportunity to have hands-on experience building a credit related, liquidity focused and banking relationship management function and leading the transformation of our liquidity, credit and banking activities, while safeguarding the company's assets.
The Team
The Head of Debt Financing, Management and Liquidity is a member of the Liquidity and Capital Strategy organization (direct report of the Treasurer), which is a dynamic team of individuals with diverse backgrounds that are focused on:
- Understanding actual and projected trends of capital levels so that they may develop strategies to improve financial performance and conditions
- Being expert at various capital frameworks and serving as an advocate for the Company in various industry or internal groups
- Minimizing time spent on production and data manipulation activities by transforming our modeling, analytic, and reporting capabilities and implementing automation and technology where possible
The Impact:
Debt Financing and Management
- Recommend optimal financing mix and secure the company's financing and capital raising options including commercial paper, surplus notes, contingent capital facilities, sale leasebacks and aviation leasing
- Evaluate and establish an intercompany borrowing program that will gain access to subsidiaries' idle excess liquidity, provide it an optimal and quick liquidity funding mechanism, with a goal of increasing overall portfolio yield
- Coordinate with cross functional teams (tax, accounting, legal) to establish, manage and maintain both intercompany and external credit/loan portfolios
- Manage overall compliance requirements on all financial commitments
Banking
- Bank relationship ambassador will be responsible for the management of existing and the creation of new banking relationships; the aggregation of each bank's company-wide trade and its optimal utilization thereof; the negotiation of the trade and related fee structures; will also include the development of a bank scorecard and becoming an active participant in the bank/client relationship meetings
- Banking administration includes having signatory authority; including corporate resolutions, and other compliance documents; as well as developing and enforcing various authorities or policies designed to protect the assets of the company
- Investment and corporate banking involving all financing, credit, and debt
Liquidity Management
- Work with Cash Operations and Head of Capital Management to develop policies and implement strategy to optimize total company and subsidiary liquidity, including execution of dividend strategy and commercial paper issuance
- Lead initiative to identify trapped cash within the total company, maximize its liquidity and yield by identify and implementing tools/agreements to easily transfer funds between legal entities
- Evaluate, recommend, and implement a treasury management system that will have and allow for ultimate creation of a total company liquidity forecasting model
Other
- M&A transaction support
- Develop talent and high-performing, diverse teams through continuous learning, honest feedback, rigorous development, and disciplined talent management
- Communication of strategy with Treasury employees to ensure understanding & alignment of goals and responsibilities
- Establish and enhance internal controls and maintain and consistently improve upon a strong control environment
- Proactively identifies risks and opportunities and translates that into decision-useful strategic recommendations
- Actively contribute as a senior leader across Company in the development and delivery of the Global initiatives within areas of accountability
- Proactively focuses on self and team development (e.g. research of credit/debt capital markets, capital frameworks, product impacts, market developments, MassMutual businesses, value creation metrics, etc)
The Minimum Qualifications
- BS in accounting, finance, or actuarial science
- 10+ years of combined experience in treasury, capital markets and/or banking
- Proven capabilities in the field of finance, including banking, capital markets and risk management
- Proven experience participating in management committees or industry / regulatory groups
- Proven experience leading teams through periods of change management
- Knowledge and experience in data automation and transformation.
- Strong knowledge and experience of US GAAP and statutory accounting
- Strong leadership skills: ability to articulate clear direction and influence others
- Strong multi-tasking skills and ability to adapt to change
The Ideal Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Finance such as MBA; CPA or a similar
- Advanced knowledge of US GAAP and Statutory accounting
- Strong knowledge of Capital frameworks (U.S. risk-based capital, rating agency capital frameworks, solvency 2, etc.), and the related impacts thereon from various strategic decisions
- Advance knowledge of credit and debt pricing and analysis
- Advanced exposure to financial modeling, including accounting and treasury capital transaction implications
- Strong Office, SAP general ledger and investment reporting systems (Eagle)
- Advanced knowledge of Bloomberg and other market driven applications
- In depth Knowledge of Treasury, Banking, Finance and Investment Operations
- Prior experience building forecasting models
- Prior experience of implementing automation techniques
- Prior experience with dashboard technologies
- Ability to proactively take ownership of projects and drive through to completion
- Experience working in a Finance transformational setting; driving change and managing competing priorities
- Ability to perform independent research and prepare impact analyses
- Detail-oriented with demonstrated oral and written communication skills
