Director of Tax and Treasury

The Director, Tax and Treasury reports into the VP of Finance is a highly visible and critical leadership position to the company. This role will have a broad scope of responsibilities across the Tax function which represents about 70% of the role. The remaining 30% will be managing the treasury function. The individual must demonstrate a strong ability to interpret and apply tax guidance and its impact to financial reporting and tax compliance as well as the ability to manage the treasury function effectively. The candidate will be managing the relationship with the company’s audit firm and third party advisors as applicable.
What You'll Do:Tax Function (70%):
- Lead all tax compliance and filing requirements for CarGurus, including but not limited to:
- Federal, state, and local income tax compliance
- Applicable franchise, property, use, and other non-income taxes
- International tax compliance including Corporate and VAT returns
- Drive accounting for income taxes for the Company on a quarterly and annual basis, including related financial statement presentation, footnotes, and memos
- Manage a Sr. Tax Analyst, providing mentorship and effective leadership to support their growth within the company
- Remain current on changes to tax laws and potential impact to CarGurus and its affiliates
- Oversee and manage tax audits to drive optimal results for company and update existing practices to mitigate potential future audits
- Direct tax planning initiatives to support and align with the Company’s strategy
- Ensure timely and accurate estimated/quarterly filings and monitor cash tax impact to cash flow
- Partner with the business to review new or changes to existing products that could impact Company’s tax position
- Work with M&A team to develop ideal tax structures for potential acquisition targets to properly advise management of tax consequences and opportunities
- Review Company’s Transfer Pricing position and ensure ongoing compliance
- Partner with external tax advisors in the US and in international jurisdictions
- Monitor ongoing changes to sales tax landscape
Treasury Function (30%):
- Management of liquidity and cash assets, overseeing work of Sr. Treasury Analyst
- Scrutinize and improve weekly, monthly, and long-term Treasury cash forecasts
- Maintain and improve upon bank relationships with existing banking partners and nurture additional relationships to support the Company’s future needs
- Ensure adequate cash funding in accounts to meet daily liquidity needs
- Review investment opportunities and seek opportunities in line with Investment Policy and Management’s instructions
- Review FX exposure and implement programs to reduce volatility as needed
- Review, recommend, design and implement operational improvements
- Ensure adherence to SOX business controls to eliminate risks for the Company
Who you are:
- 7-10 years of progressive experience in tax role, with prior management experience
- Proven track record of managing Teams
- Prior experience working for a public accounting firm as well as managing the tax function in a publicly traded company required
- Strong knowledge of reporting requirements in tax provision US GAAP
- Ability to work simultaneously in the details and present high-level overviews to upper management
- A high level of analytical and strategic ability is required
- Advanced degree preferred
- High level of integrity and transparency, while being able to work independently and within budget
- Expertise in OneSource provision software a plus
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and manage well at all levels of the company
