VMware is seeking an experienced Vice President (VP) Engineering to lead a global engineering organization (development, quality, architecture) in Boston, MA. You will have a track record of leading and scaling high performance software organizations, including globalmanagement experience. Precise industry experience in VMware's domain is not necessary but a deep understanding of SaaS, cloud and platform software isessential. You will also have broad managerial experience in global multi-location environments including transforming an engineering organization for speed and SaaS delivery. The VP Engineering will have proven skills in team building, communication, leadership and organizational scaling.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Vice President and CTO, you will lead a fast-growing direct team of approximately 150+ people acrossthreegeographies. You will be responsible for working closely with product management in executing a strategy to advance our market leading cloud management platform. In this role you will set objectives for the organization and ensure the productquality, integration, interoperability, globalization, supportability, and look and feel meet the standards of our customers and of VMware.

You will establish a culture of excellence in execution. You will define realistic targets and achievements, establish a high level of team participation and interaction, serve as an inspiring leader, drive a culture of innovating on behalf of customers, ensure that quality is a high priority at every stage, and deliver continuous value to our customers. This executive will also work closely with other development organizations across VMware.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Work with product management to execute a product strategy that maintains and advances our market leadership position in multi-cloud management.

  • Establish and communicate clear organizational objectives to ensure we maintain engineering excellence across our products and platform.

  • Deliver to our product roadmaps on-time and with high quality. 

  • Make organizational and process changes to eliminate any friction impairing us from the continuous delivery of value for ourcustomers, andmaximize engineering productivity.

  • Develop, lead, and inspire the team. Be a magnet for engineering talent and accelerate hiring. Solidify succession plans and enhance management capabilities to meet strategic and operating objectives.

  • Be a respected leader in the company. Establish a strong collaborative culture with peers and other functions within VMware. Promote a culture of success, pride, performance, discipline, and creativity. Be an effective spokesperson and champion for theCloudHealthengineering team.

  • Possess a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of the complexities and needs of running a software development organization such as making technology and architectural trade-offs, competitive analysis, market gap analysis, life-cycle management, etc.

  • Work closely and engage with VMware executives and direct reports to establish an environment that is motivating and entrepreneurial in nature. Work especially closely with Engineering teams and Product Management to obtain prompt resolution to key business issues likely to impact product release schedules, product requirements, product quality, and business operations.

Required Qualifications

  • 15+ years of progressively broadening engineering, QE and operations leadership experience building enterprise grade software products and SaaS services delivering with high quality and operational readiness across a suite of products.

  • Experience working in large public cloud or SaaS companies.

  • Has inherent knowledge of development processes and best practices to manage multiple projects consistently on time and on budget.

  • Ability to dive deep into technical details as and when necessary, garnering the respect of the engineering teams and assisting in the correct technical choices if appropriate.

  • Consistent track record of success leading development teams in a dynamic entrepreneurial environment where management of complex product requirements is a critical driver of success.

  • Specific experience transforming, organizing and/or reorganizing an engineering function for growth into highly competitive new markets and/or has been through an on-prem to SaaS transformation allowing for strategic opportunities requiring short product life cycles and flexible and adaptable product architectures.

  • Demonstrated track record of implementing enhanced engineering processes that shorten release cycles and improve “time to market” for new products.

  • Validated leadership experience setting the vision and building, leading, and motivating engineering teams. Trained in software development organization and leadership from a company well known and widely respected for world-class software development processes and practices.

  • Has successfully led technical teams of at least 100+.

  • Stays abreast of key competitor actions and their implications or threats to the business.

  • Experienced managing geographically distributed teams.

  • Conveys an understanding of the organization's global market position, opportunities, capabilities, and competitive threats.

  • Identifies and anticipates customer requirements, expectations, and needs.

  • Prepares realistic estimates of resource requirements (e.g., budget, headcount) needed to accomplish team or work group objectives.

  • Able to be assertive when necessary and hold people accountable for achieving their goals.

  • Leads by example, creating a sense of energy, ownership, detail orientation, collaboration and personal commitment to the work.

  • Inspires others to stretch beyond what they thought they could do.

Education

Technical undergraduate degree required.
