Senior Healthcare Data Analyst
The Opportunity:
athenahealth is a pioneering company in electronic health records and medical practice management, all under a single-instance, cloud-based, software-enabled services platform. This platform, which connects us to 12% of the practicing physicians in the country, gives us access to a constant feed of clinical, operational, and financial data that captures how medicine is practiced across the United States.
The mission of athenaResearch is to publish cutting edge analysis and thought leadership using our proprietary data set. Topics include disease surveillance, prescription trends, analysis of policy changes, and most importantly, detailed analysis of physician practice operations, clinical behavior, and economics. Our work plays a central role in athena’s positioning with external audiences and has been published in The New England Journal of Medicine, Health Affairs, Harvard Business Review, and numerous popular press and trade publications.
We are looking for a bright, intellectually restless, motivated, team oriented analyst with strong programming skills and a passion for health care. Experience analyzing healthcare data is not required – you can apply your past analytic experience techniques to our datasets while learning about the healthcare space from a team of talented analysts, while having support from our data scientists to help you leverage our AWS environment and expand the boundaries of our analytic work.
Position Summary:
Our database provides unprecedented access to significant computing resources and an amazing dataset that spans all stages of the healthcare life cycle, removing barriers to answering questions and providing you with a flexible, challenging and extremely rewarding analytic environment. Extract and analyze data from our production systems to deliver a steady stream of new data slices and analyses to our stakeholders that answer questions about healthcare utilization, quality, outcomes and cost. Work with our academic research partners to develop new datasets that can be applied to their research. Develop methods to analyze key healthcare business issues and support deep dive analyses into how providers can improve clinical and financial performance.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Overall
- Independently manage projects from beginning to end
- Strong willingness and aptitude for learning new concepts and analytical approaches
- Develop a “trusted advisor” reputation across athenahealth. Understand how to create insights from all aspects of our business, from EMR data to medical billing and population health
- Use SQL, Perl and R to create new data sets to support your analysis and build the foundation for future analyses
- Become an expert on athenahealth’s business processes and data structures

- Conduct rigorous analysis of key health care issues:
- Ensure a constant flow of new analyses to our stakeholders
- Analyze healthcare data for key insights and deliver a summary of findings

- Collaborate with academic and internal partners to develop external facing research and context
- Work with academic research partners to construct new, de-identified datasets to support their analysis
- Work with our content teams to create compelling external facing content and data visualizations based on your analysis
