Robot Dynamics and Controls Engineer

| Waltham
We’re Veo Robotics, a venture-backed, early-stage startup that was recently featured in AmericanInno’s “18 Boston Startups to Watch” list. Using advanced computer vision and 3D sensing, we’re transforming manufacturing by giving industrial robots perception and intelligence to allow them to collaborate safely with humans on tasks that need to leverage human flexibility and dexterity as well as robotic strength and precision. Our company is founded by industry veterans and backed by Lux Capital, GV (formerly Google Ventures), and Next47. Sound interesting? You can find out more about what we're working on in this TechCrunch article.
Our talented interdisciplinary team in Waltham, MA is growing! We are looking for the kind of people who are inspired just not by exciting technology, but by the opportunity to help build an engineering culture of rigor and excellence.
The large industrial robots we work with are fast, precise, and incredibly strong. We’re looking for a dynamics and controls engineer who understands the physics of these industrial robots to help us develop the high-performance control algorithms that enable safe and efficient human-machine collaboration.

You will:

  • Through experimentation and analysis, develop a deep understanding of the dynamic performance of a wide range of large industrial robots
  • Develop new models of physical interaction between robots and humans
  • Architect and implement highly reliable control algorithms optimized for high performance CPU and GPU computing platforms
  • Work directly with robot manufacturers on interface development
  • Keep up with relevant developments in robot dynamics and controls through literature searches, networking, conferences, etc

You are:

  • A Masters or PhD in electrical or mechanical engineering or a related field, or have equivalent experience
  • A first-principles thinker with a deep understanding of the physics of robot dynamics who can invent novel solutions to challenging problems
  • Experienced in designing rigorous, well-structured, and repeatable experiments that prove causality rather than assuming it
  • A skilled communicator capable of building productive technical working relationships with robot vendors
  • Willing to operate outside your area of direct expertise to solve hard problems with the rest of our cross-disciplinary team

Bonus points:

  • Experience working with at least one large industrial robot, e.g. ABB, Fanuc, Kuka, or Yaskawa
  • Experience with C++
  • Experience following a structured software development process including development of rigorous unit and systems tests

Our toolbox includes:

  • ABB, Fanuc, Kuka, and Yaskawa robots and controllers
  • C++, Python, JavaScript
  • GPU acceleration, CUDA
  • Linux, Git, JIRA
