Position Overview

As our engineering team grows, we are recruiting a hands-on Release Engineer Lead / Manager to join our global QA/RE team to ensure the continuing high quality of product releases. This role will actively manage feature and bug fix content, ensure sufficient test coverage and results analysis, as well as build and publish the release.
This is an ideal opportunity for either, an experienced Release Engineering Lead who wants to get more involved in the Release Management aspects, or a technical Release Manager who has the skills to get their hands dirty in build and build automation aspects.
The location is flexible and may be filled at any of our offices in Boston (Cambridge), Dublin or Sofia
Depending on candidate skill set, we may split this into two roles:

  • Release Manager – program management, process improvement, operational supervision
  • Release Engineering Lead – technical build, automation improvements


Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Build and release our database-in-the-cloud product with consistent high quality
  • Work with Product Management and Engineering leads to understand requirements, define release plans for major features, maintenance updates, and emergency patches
  • Help define the release quality criteria and manage to it
  • Manage release progress against plan, ensuring sufficient test coverage (as part of the QA/RE team), test analysis, participate in bug fix management (what needs to be fixed by when), etc.
  • Technical management of our JIRA and Bamboo processes, including managing branches, restricting access, analyzing/assigning issues, etc.
  • Cost and utilization management of NuoDBs lab and Cloud resources.
  • Work with Product Management, Engineering, Documentation, Support, and Marketing to ensure all aspects for a successful release are covered, including Support training, customer-facing documentation, etc.
  • Modify the release processes as necessary to support new cloud deployment options to meet customer needs
  • Work with development leads to drive quality upstream, in particular, to ensure the CI process delivers always releasable code (CD ability)
  • Learn from our customers' experience, identifying test gaps and escapes to drive continuous improvement of our testing and development/release processes
  • Be a thought leader in the NuoDB engineering community and a tech lead to mentor more junior colleagues
  • Own release quality. Work closely with QA colleagues in the team to ensure quality.

 

We are looking for an outstanding engineer who:

  • Is passionate about quality and providing the ultimate customer experience
  • Is results-oriented and a self-starter with a track record of both leading initiatives and working independently in a distributed team
  • Has excellent program management skills, including strong communication and influencing skills
  • Has the ability to drive continuous improvement of our software release process and understands the importance of release repeatability and reproducibility
  • Is detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple moving items in parallel including feature content, bug fixes, deadlines, test results, documentation and release validation
  • Enjoys exploring and learning new technologies and new problem domains
  • Is hands-on and able to administer tools such as Bamboo (build/test) and JIRA
  • Has the ability to design and implement build and release automation improvements
  • Is a team player. Release quality is a team sport.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can effectively handle multiple competing priorities and projects. This person demonstrates a breadth of knowledge in release engineering management, automation, and best practices, as well as having an eagerness to learn new things and stay abreast of emerging industry trends and technologies.


Skills & Experience:

  • 7+ years of Release Engineering experience, including in a technical leadership position
  • 5+ years of experience with build automation frameworks such as Bamboo or Jenkins
  • 5+ years of experience of CI/CD
  • 5+ years of Program Management experience
  • 3+ years of experience with infrastructure/platform/distributed systems software
  • 3+ years of experience with high-availability enterprise software
  • 3+ years of experience with Cloud (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure)
  • 3+ years of experience with Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift
  • 3+ years of experience with Databases (SQL or noSQL)
  • Strong Agile and DevOps experience
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to root cause complex technical issues
  • Experience with Python, Java, and C++ a strong plus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • A sense of humor
  • BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent work experience
