Desktop Metal is revolutionizing 3D printing of metal parts. Our printer’s robust build processes create complex parts beautifully at a price attainable by any design and manufacturing team and can be used within an office environment. We are looking to bring on board bright, motivated team members across wide spectrum of engineering disciplines. DesktopMetal is seeking a talented and self-motivated PLC and Controls Engineer. The ideal candidate will have experience programming commercially available PLC’s, off-the-shelf motion controllers, and bespoke embedded motion control solutions.

The PLC and Controls Engineer will be responsible for:

  • Receiving and evaluating ladder logic and SCL code from third party suppliers
  • Improving and documenting existing software
  • Writing ladder logic, SCL and other code to support machine motion and sensing
  • Assisting with implementing and testing software requirements
  • Debug and testing of PLC and other motion control code
  • Bringup and testing of both prototype and production machines
  • Documenting designs and assisting with development of test plans
  • Working closely with program management and regulatory teams
  • Documentation of troubleshooting procedures for PLC systems
  • Implementing PLC communication with other systems.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to develop deep understanding of the business and end user needs quickly, and can proficiently translate those needs into the right technology solution
  • Broad exposure to PLCs, motion controllers, and embedded systems,
  • Development practices including common engineering tools used for such efforts with detailed knowledge and expertise in at least one of these areas
  • Experience developing ladder logic and other PLC code for systems with multiple axes and sensing technologies
  • Implemented multi-axis servo and stepper controls
  • Ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to write technical specifications, manufacturing and maintenance procedures
  • Expert in robotics and/or 3D printing
  • BS/MS Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Understanding of safety systems and functionally safe design
