The Opportunity:athenahealth is transforming healthcare by creating easy to use, ultra-powerful, cloud based tools which allow medical professionals to focus on what they do best – treat patients. Our product and services impact the practice of medicine for half of all physicians in the US. Our network covers over 46 million patient lives and 160 million visits per year.
We are a technology-enabled services company, and as we progress towards our vision of being the health information backbone for the entire nation, we need to ensure that athena’s products are built on a truly elastic and performant platform. We are embarking on an initiative to build a next generation platform and deliver a new set of core services that will allow our own product teams, as well as external 3rd parties, to efficiently consume and manipulate massive data sets and operate at the truly massive scale we need to in order to service the health information needs of the country. Come join our team and help make this aspiration a reality.
Position Summary:

As a Platform Architect you will be responsible for leading the technical strategy and vision for one or more components of athenahealth’s next generation platform, closely working with other technologists to define key architectural capabilities, guide development teams on their successful implementation, and ensure the stability, security and scalability of our systems. The role requires you to have a deep understanding of a variety of technology stacks, components, and languages; calling upon that knowledge to make critical technical design decisions.
At a high level, the group’s initiatives cover a set of services that will:
  • Provide a centralized healthcare data I/O framework allowing any system or user, both internal and external to extract, search and persist data at scale
  • Provide a programmatic and GUI-based means of managing the orchestration of state-machines, complex event processing, and the massive amount of ETL we perform on a daily basis
  • Provide a holistic and consolidated view on a patient’s demographic, claim and clinical data regardless of whether the data is sourced from an athena practice, another vendor’s acute or ambulatory EHR or any point of care in the care continuum.

Responsibilities include:

  • Drive the strategic vision of the technology within the platform, aligning the technological and architectural visions to ensure current and future stability and scalability of athena products and platform services.
  • Lead and advise one or more scrum teams, providing mentorship and guidance on technical decisions, and ensuring alignment of teams to strategic goals.
  • Identify and evaluate open source, commercial, and “Platform as a Service” solutions to determine where and how to leverage them, or when it’s more appropriate to build from scratch.
  • Lead by example with hands-on development of high quality, production code that powers critical pieces of the product.
  • Perform design and code reviews to ensure code quality throughout the platform.
  • Lead discussions and make specific recommendations for platform improvements from a technical perspective.
  • Primary source of communication on current state of the platform’s technology stack.
  • Work with application team stakeholders to ensure the platform is delivering value to our products as anticipated.

Education, Experience, & Skills Required:

  • Bachelor Degree or equivalent
  • 10-12 years of professional experience
  • Expert software engineering skills and deep knowledge of computer science fundamentals
  • Excellent understanding of scalable, cloud architectures, RESTful API design and microservices and experience in applying them to real world problems
  • Experience working in large scale, agile environment
  • Substantial expertise in one or more modern programming languages; Java and/or JavaScript(Node.js) preferred
  • Extensive hands-on experience with one or more of modern web application stacks such as LAMP, MEAN, Dropwizard or Spring Boot
  • Deep understanding and hands-on experience with NoSQL and other distributed, big data technologies (Spark, Kafka, Cassandra, Elasticsearch) and strong familiarity with Unix/Linux, SQL.
