XL Fleet seeks an experienced mechanical engineer to perform design, development, and production support of mechanical powertrain components and systems for commercial hybrid electric vehicles. This person will be a core technical contributor of the Engineering team at XL.

Responsibilities

  • Design & develop packaging of mechanical components for commercial hybrid electric vehicles including:
    • Custom frame cross members.
    • Mounting brackets for traction motors, inverters, battery packs & auxiliary components (pumps, reservoirs, radiators and microcomputers).
    • Develop & test routing for cooling hoses, high voltage, and low voltage wiring.
    • Develop, prototype & integrate custom drive shaft components (spline shafts, u-joints, tube shafts, slip yokes, bearings, boots).
  • Support development of custom core components (batteries/inverters/motors/chargers etc.).
  • Extract CAD of full vehicle models from OEMs to design/package added hybrid components.
  • Support sustaining engineering by assessing model year variations and updating components/BOMs.
  • Perform integration of mechanical systems into prototype vehicles and subsequent road test driving to verify designs for production.
  • Adapt products to new vehicle platforms driving for commonality and modularity
  • Perform mechanical and thermal analysis and develop models to predict component and system behavior
  • Support testing to validate component and subsystem designs off road & on road tests including management of subcontracted efforts such as full vehicle crash testing and component design validation
  • Work with Sr. Engineers to transition designs to production & support production launch of components
  • Interface with manufacturers & incorporate design for manufacturability concepts into prototypes & production components
  • Develop and manage prototype component suppliers including quoting and ordering
  • Support configuration control of the hybrid system bill of materials
  • Support development of installation and maintenance instructions

Candidate will report to the Sr. Mechanical Engineer & work closely with other project engineers

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with minimum 3 years of relevant industry experience
  • Proficient in SolidWorks solid model CAD, file management, and engineering drawing release
  • Demonstrated experience taking products from concept to production release
  • Must be able to work full time in XL Hybrids’ Boston office
  • Hands-on aptitude and willingness to work on vehicles in the shop/lab areas
  • Willingness to travel,  <10% of time

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in automotive engineering including hybrid vehicle development experience
  • Direct automotive design or technician experience
  • Previous powertrain work experience for a major vehicle OEM
  • Proficient in structural, vibration, thermal analysis, finite element and/or CFD tools
