Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Human Computer Interaction (HCI) design researcher with applied Cognitive Systems Engineering or User Interface Design expertise to lead and support research and design efforts on a variety of novel human computer interfaces, applications and platforms.

In this role, you will work with small teams of research scientists and software engineers to develop interactive prototypes as part of a user-centered design process. You will employ principled and creative approaches to move from research concepts to design prototypes, and ultimately oversee development into functional software systems. The systems engineering process you will contribute to includes knowledge elicitation, requirements analysis, and prototyping new user interactions through dynamic mock-ups that ensure exceptional design execution.

You’ll collaborate with our scientists and software engineers to determine requirements, design creative approaches, and assist in implementing these designs in elegant decision support systems. You will support evaluation and application of research ideas throughout the systems engineering process and create documentation of your results for technical and scientific presentation.

Major Responsibilities/Activities:

  • Research and design novel human computer interfaces, such as graphical user interfaces, augmented reality-based interfaces, multimodal interfaces, or gesture-based interaction methods
  • Study/model/understand diverse customer needs in complex systems
  • Coordinate day-to-day responsibilities to other designers and software engineers to implement solutions
  • Conduct technical discussions with customers with support from other scientists
  • Write and contribute to proposals, reports, and papers
  • Present work at briefings and conferences

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Master’s degree in Cognitive Systems Engineering, Human Factors, Interaction Design, or Cognitive Science (or a related field) or a strong track record conducting research and development in these areas
  • Strong aesthetic design sense and functional reasoning skills with superior attention to detail
  • Strong portfolio of interface design and writing that shows high quality of work
  • Strong verbal and written skills to support proposal writing, interaction with customers, and presentations at technical conferences
  • Interest in and ability to apply leading design trends and data science techniques to support

Nice to Have:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience creating systems engineering and user-experiences
  • Multimodal interface design (e.g., gesture, auditory displays, augmented reality (AR)-based displays) skills and experience designing and evaluating prototypes
  • Experience designing interfaces for humans teaming with artificial intelligence or autonomous systems
  • Experience designing interfaces for the medical domain
  • Military Service or DoD work experience
  • Technical or peer-reviewed publications in any of the above fields
  • Domain experience addressing autonomous systems, intelligence analysis, or tactical aviation

Benefits:
