Head of Research & Development
Boston Microfluidics (BMF) has developed a revolutionary product for the collection and dry storage of human patient blood samples.

We are looking for a Head of Research & Development to lead our R&D team and partner with the Chief Innovation Officer. The person who joins our team in this role will oversee the building out of the R&D team. This includes the engineering, chemistry, and customs/OEM teams.
The Head of R&D will be responsible for new product launches – for hitting product development milestones on time and on budget. Head of R&D will work closely with the Quality group to ensure proper documented quality, with VP of Operations to ensure a smooth transfer of developed products into manufacturing.
The Head of R&D will report to the CEO and will have frequent interactions with BMF’s Board of Directors.
Job duties include:
- Build out Chemistry and Custom/OEM capabilities
- Coach and develop young engineering team
- Work with the Chief Innovation Officer to generate IP and new product ideas
- Drive meaningful external partnerships to execute on product development – this includes initiating conversations, negotiating co-development contracts, and launching co-developed products
- Provide mature leadership and guidance with the goal of building a highly functional and effective team, as well as mentoring individual employees as they grow along their own professional trajectories
- Demonstrate excellent budgeting and forecasting practices to drive product launches
- Demonstrate strong understanding of ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR 820, and CE
- Collaborate with the CEO to represent “Top Management” of the company’s ISO 13485 certified quality system
- Develop and implement policies and standards for regulatory and business compliance
- Execute on-the-ground team management as well as prepare and present regular updates for the Board of Directors.
Experience:
- Proven track record for launching high revenue products
- Consistent history of meeting and exceeding new product launches
- Experience with complex external co-development relationships
- History of managing national (and global, desired) R&D teams
- Working in a fast-paced start up environment
- Demonstrated experience with the design and manufacture of Class I and II medical devices
- Recruiting and building a strong team by proactively understanding needs
- Mentoring and developing a young entrepreneurial organization
Education:
- BS in sciences or equivalent experience
- PhD or MD highly desirable
