Join a high-performing, tight-knit team at a fast-growing company that is using the Internet of Things (IOT) to transform how organizations sense, monitor, and make decisions. Founded out of MIT in 2005, SmartSense is trusted by more than 2,000 organizations, including Walmart, SpaceX, Apple, CVS Health, Coca-Cola, and the US State Department to help them make sensor-driven decisions. We have a solution that our customers rely on every day to make mission critical decisions; we are looking for team-oriented change agents to help shape the future of IOT.

Disproportionately impact a customer-driven startup that is transforming the way companies monitor their critical environments and make decisions about safeguarding their key assets. We’re building next-generation IoT products and infrastructure that helps companies measure their world, transmit their valuable metrics to a centralized location, alert when there is something to be concerned about and even predict key events before they happen.

Dive into an empowered electrical engineering role. You’ll use all of your varied skills (electrical, firmware, mechanical) to enhance our existing products and help design our next generation of IoT devices. This is an opportunity to design, produce, and deploy custom hardware and firmware across the globe. You will create the cutting-edge sensors, embedded systems, and wireless sensor networks that enable SmartSense to succeed. You will be responsible for everything from high level design specifications, to circuit design, to board layout, to protocol definitions, to firmware development, to RF characterization, to real-world testing. This is an opportunity to take professional ownership of your work, from ideation to deployment. Choose when to hack and when to invest. You’ll apply judgment to where we can get the most benefit for our efforts.

SmartSense is an incredibly fast paced customer-driven company and you’ll be performing key role essential to our future success. Our close-knit, cross-functional team is a great chance to grow your knowledge across all layers of our system.

You’ll join a team where everyone—including you—is knowledgeable about engineering patterns, an excellent teammate and opinionated about the product development process. We all pitch in to help wherever necessary when things are crazy. You’ll be challenged to learn new skills and tools, and you’ll be encouraged to expand your professional comfort zone.

Core technologies:

Low-power embedded systems, circuit design, PCB layout, RF design, low-level firmware in C, security & encryption, measurement & instrumentation devices, test methodology

Core qualifications:

MS/MEng/BS degree in EE, 3-5 years of related experience, ability to deliver results with little supervision, attention to small details, natural curiosity and drive to investigate unexplained behavior, experience in a fast paced environment

WITHIN 3 MONTHS, YOU’LL…

  • Design, build, and test custom low-power sensing solutions from the ground up: schematics, PCBs, firmware, testing
  • Write internal documentation for your designs
  • See your prototypes tested by real customers, and incorporate their feedback into your revisions
  • Learn the nuts and bolts of our next generation IoT sensing platform

WITHIN 6 MONTHS, YOU’LL...

  • Influence next generation hardware and firmware designs
  • Be able to own the entire planning, scoping, design, and implementation of new hardware devices
  • Participate in team-wide project estimation and scoping
  • Help support large-scale manufacturing and deployment of devices you have designed

WITHIN 12 MONTHS, YOU’LL…

  • Work with minimal supervision to contribute substantially to the engineering team
  • Train, mentor and influence your peers
  • Expand your areas of expertise to assist other engineers in creative new ways

SmartSense builds internet connected sensors and software that enable organizations to automatically monitor, track, and analyze sensor data for quality control, compliance, and operational efficiency. Our team is motivated to improve the world by providing real-time information that ensures medication and food safety. Our Vaccine Monitoring Initiative donates one system for each system we sell, so that a healthcare clinic in need can monitor life-saving vaccines. We endeavor to be both the best in the world at what we do, as well as, to be the best for the world because of how we do it; if you’re the right candidate, we will reach that goal together – and have a great time doing it!
