Veo Robotics is seeking an experienced automation controls engineer to assist in the development and testing of new automation safety systems enabling human-robot collaboration. Our Integration & Robotics team designs, builds, and operates manufacturing workcells in order to test and characterize the Veo system in real-world scenarios. As the Automation Controls Engineer in this group, you’ll use your prior experience conceptualizing, designing, and deploying industrial equipment controls to contribute to the creation and operation of these testbeds. You’ll build relationships with customers during site visits and in-plant testing and help the Veo development team design and test for new operational scenarios. You’ll also be an important contributor to product discussions, drawing on your background to provide context for how the Veo systems will be set up and used by our customers.

You will:

  • Conceptualize, design, and build new automation systems and control strategies for manufacturing workcells that demonstrate the capabilities of collaborative human/robot workspaces
  • Architect, write, and debug industrial robot programs
  • Architect, write, and debug PLC ladder logic which interacts with subsystems such as industrial robots, conveyors, fixtures, safety equipment, sensors, and human-machine interfaces
  • Implement standards-compliant control strategies in accordance with collaborative robot and machinery safety standards such as ISO 15066
  • Carry out risk assessments in accordance with ISO 10218-2 and/or ANSI 15.06
  • Create machine interactions and program visual status indicators which improve the human-robot collaboration experience
  • Work closely with potential customers to understand how they build their production lines, and help to develop solutions leveraging the Veo system for their applications. This will involve travel to domestic and international customer sites to carry out user research and system testing (25-30% of your time)

You are:

  • An automation engineer with 5+ years experience in a hands-on controls or applications engineering capacity for industrial control technology. This could be in the automotive, aerospace, consumer packaged goods, and/or process industries
  • Proficient in programming industrial equipment and experienced with at least one major industrial robot brand (Kuka, Fanuc, ABB, Motoman, etc)
  • Experienced designing industrial Human-Machine Interfaces, such as Ignition, AB panelview, or similar
  • Familiar with safety PLC integration onto fieldbus networks, such as Allen Bradley ControlLogix, Siemens, SmartGuard, Omron, Pilz, or similar
  • Familiar with the nuances and use of a variety of industrial communication busses, including integration of distributed I/O to field bus networks (Ethernet/IP, AB-DeviceNet, Profinet, ProfiSafe), serial communication (RS232, RS485) between PLCs and instruments, and latency capabilities of field-bus networks and Functional Safety over Ethernet FSoE
  • Proficient in creating detailed electrical schematics in AutoCAD electrical/ePlan
  • A first-principles thinker who can invent novel solutions to challenging technical problems
  • Willing to operate outside your area of direct expertise to solve hard problems with the rest of our cross-disciplinary team
  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or a related field preferred

Bonus points:

  • Experience with industrial vision systems
  • Experience creating pneumatic system drawings
  • Knowledge of controls trends by industry
  • Experience creating technical specifications for highly automated manufacturing equipment

  • TIA Portal, RSLogix, PC Worx, etc
