WHO WE ARE:

ActBlue is a nonprofit that builds tech and infrastructure for Democratic campaigns, progressive-aligned causes, and people trying to make an impact in order to fuel long-term, people-powered change. If you’ve ever given online to a Democrat or progressive organization, chances are you’ve used our powerful online fundraising platform.

We put power in the hands of small-dollar donors and help thousands of groups — from presidential candidates to environmental organizations — build grassroots movements. We envision a democracy where everyone looking to make progressive people-powered change can easily and effectively deploy their resources, energy, and creativity to shape our country and futures. Each and every one of us, from the political activists to the tech innovators to the customer service pros, is fully committed to our mission.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

ActBlue Technical Services’ (ATS) product organization is made up of 80+ people (and growing!). We’re organized into cross-functional teams that operate independently in alignment with ActBlue’s broader organizational goals.

In this role, you will be responsible for understanding user needs, exploring ideas and direction, and designing end-to-end user experiences. You will work on end-to-end projects with agency and in concert with our UX Research, Product, Engineering, Marketing, Customer Service, and Outreach teams.

Your manager will be your coach, supporting your professional growth while you contribute to the excellence and advancement of our platform.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Lead the design of end-to-end user experiences for our campaign and organization users, from exploration to wireframes to prototypes.
  • Help define and articulate design approach, as well as project and team goals, to your team and to the organization.
  • Act as an advocate for users throughout the product development life cycle.
  • Use research and data to inform and implement solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with our UX Research, Product, Engineering, and Data teams to identify opportunities and solutions for our users.
  • Partner closely with Engineering to support implementation.
  • Present your work to designers and product teams design crits and feedback sessions.
  • Work closely with other designers and engineers to grow and maintain our design system.

WHAT YOU BRING:

  • A curiosity-based mindset with a focus on user needs.
  • A focus on human-centered design principles that lead with inclusion and accessibility.
  • Strong written and communication skills.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Comfort collaborating with a remote, distributed team of cross-functional colleagues.
  • An inclusive, generous working style. You like to collaborate and elevate your team by supporting your peers.

NICE TO HAVE (BUT NOT REQUIRED)

  • You have previous experience in politics or nonprofits, either as staff or a volunteer.
  • You have previous experience in financial products or e-commerce.
  • You are curious about new technologies and methodologies and have a track record of applying what you learn to improve your team’s work.

WHAT YOU'LL BE WORKING WITH:

  • Design stack: Figma, Adobe Suite, Miro
  • Tech stack: Storybook, Styled Components, React, and other modern front-end technologies

OUR DESIGN PRINCIPLES:

  • We believe that ideas are more important than tools or technologies.
  • We believe in humanizing our work by designing for accessibility and inclusion.
  • We believe in high-level thinking as well as being detail-oriented; we focus on pixel-level details and microinteractions while also considering how details can ripple out at scale.
  • We believe that being correct isn’t enough; respect for your colleagues and users is fundamental.

OUR ENGINEERING VALUES:

  • We believe that ideas are more important than technologies.
  • We understand that the tools we build have real-world consequences for millions of people and take that responsibility seriously.
  • Security is at the center of everything we do. We are always on the lookout for ways to further harden our platform.
  • We know that code isn’t just a set of instructions for machines, but communication with other humans; style, elegance, and respect are important.
  • We believe that an ability to balance paying off technical debt and rapidly completing a project contributes to the health of the codebase, engineering team, and organization.
  • We believe that being correct isn’t enough; respect for your colleagues and users is fundamental.

An Insider's view of ActBlue

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

ActBlue has incredible work life balance! Unlimited PTO is a lifesaver. I organize outside of work for local elections, mutual aid, & direct action, and sometimes that happens during the workday. Having sufficient time to rest also helps me be more motivated & enjoy work. The culture treats PTO with respect & no one is guilted for taking time off.

Crystal

Data Engineer

What projects are you most excited about?

Our team is in the beginning stages of a Roles and Permissions overhaul for our Campaign and Non-Profit users. We will be adding the ability for these entities to grant varying access levels for different users. We hope this will allow for more users to be added to the platform, while keeping their data secure.

Nate

Senior Software Engineer

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

When I first started at ActBlue in 2019, I didn’t write any code. Thanks to the supportive, mentorship-focused approach within the organization, I was given the space to learn and grow my engineering skill set. I paired regularly with my peers, did coursework, and was empowered to take on projects outside of my comfort zone.

Alli

Senior Product Designer

How do you empower your team to be more creative?

Fostering creativity starts with trust. I think innovation comes when we give individuals the autonomy to solve problems, not just build prescribed solutions. Our team collaborates early and often, empowers individuals to understand the why instead of just the what, and encourages risk through a culture of learning through iteration.

Ani

Senior Engineering Manager

What are some things you learned at the company?

As a more "seasoned" member of ActBlue, I appreciate the company's commitment to Diversity and Inclusion. I learn something new almost every single day. Working here is helping me be a better person.

Martin

Engineering Manager, DevOps
