The Opportunity:
athenahealth is a pioneering company in electronic health records and medical practice management, all under a single-instance, cloud-based, software-enabled services platform. This platform, which connects us to 12% of the practicing physicians in the country, gives us access to a constant feed of clinical, operational, and financial data that captures how medicine is practiced across the United States.
The mission of athenaResearch is to publish cutting edge analysis and thought leadership using our proprietary data set. Topics include disease surveillance, analysis of policy changes, and most importantly, detailed analysis of physician practice operations, clinical behavior, and financial performance. We have a particular focus on identifying our most successful groups and physicians to understand and disseminate the keys to top performance. Our work plays a central role in athena’s positioning with external audiences and has been published in The New England Journal of Medicine, Health Affairs, Harvard Business Review, and numerous popular and trade publications.
Position Summary:
The Manager of Physician Performance Improvement is a high-profile position within athena. He or she will spearhead the creation of thought leadership materials to improve the performance of the over 100,000 health care providers using athenahealth’s cloud-based software and services. To our knowledge, no organization has aggressively leveraged the cloud to drive performance improvement on practice-focused activities across a nationally distributed physician network.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing criteria to define top performance in a variety of domains relevant to physician practices and specialties
  • Designing and analyzing physician and staff surveys
  • Conducting interviews with high performing athenahealth clients
  • Conducting secondary literature review and analysis
  • Assembling PowerPoint presentations on physician performance
  • Presenting to internal and external constituencies
  • Developing Excel models on various financial, operational, and clinical aspects of physician practice performance
  • Manage and develop physician performance analyst


Education, Experience, & Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; advanced degrees may be valued as well
  • Understanding of healthcare industry preferred
  • 2-4 years relevant business experience
  • Ability to assemble and deliver compelling presentations
  • Expertise with Excel, PowerPoint
