Here at Hometap, we’re collaborative, passionate, and always ready to roll up our sleeves to create solutions that help people get more out of homeownership — and out of life. Our first product, a home equity investment, gives homeowners the opportunity to quickly access the equity they’ve built in their home to pay for what’s most important to them, from handling debt to finally making much-needed renovations, without taking on debt.

We work hard, and have some fun along the way, too. You don’t have to take our word for it: The Boston Globe and Comparably have recognized us as a great place to work, and we’ve been honored for our commitment to innovation in the fintech space by BostInno, HousingWire, and more!

In case you need any more convincing, we also provide competitive compensation, healthcare coverage, unlimited PTO, a generous share package, and a strong culture with plenty of opportunities for team-building and camaraderie.

Interested in joining us on our mission to make homeownership less stressful and more accessible? We’d love to talk.

Who You Are:

The Data Science team at Hometap ensures we are making the right investments in the right homeowners and homes across the country. Our comprehensive roadmap includes building and deploying models to predict most aspects of a homeowner’s journey with us in an effort to streamline the process for the homeowner and maximize investor value.

In the role of Senior Data Engineer, you will be asked to turn data into information, information into insight, and insight into business decisions. You will be responsible for conducting full data lifecycle activities to include requirements analysis and design, develop analysis and reporting capabilities, and continuously monitor performance and quality control plans to identify improvements. The ideal candidate is an experienced pipeline builder and data wrangler who enjoys optimizing data systems and building them from the ground up.

What You’ll Do:

  • Provide technical leadership for design, documentation, and maintenance of databases and related systems; create database storage structures, resolve database and ETL issues and maintain system security
  • Support development and implementation of business applications that optimize efficiency and data quality
  • Monitor daily operations of data loads and identify data discrepancies, data quality issues, and work to ensure data consistency and integrity
  • Develop an enterprise data dictionary and define data standards; maintain detailed and current data warehouse system documentation; define and document internal/external data flows
  • Proactively seek out and acquire data from primary or secondary data sources and maintain databases/data warehouse systems
  • Collaborate with business partners to transform business requirements into environment specific ETL/ELT, reporting, and data validation designs; work closely with management to prioritize business and information needs
  • Design specifications and standards for semantic layers and multidimensional models for complex Business Intelligence and application development projects
  • Maintain database performance by identifying and resolving production and application development problems; calculating optimum values for parameters; evaluating, integrating, and installing new releases; completing maintenance; and answering user questions
  • Optimize utilization of contracted development resources. Manage work queues based on priority and business requirement

What You’ll Bring:

  • Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases
  • Experience designing, building, and optimizing ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures and data sets
  • Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets
  • The ability to design and build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency and workload management
  • A successful history of manipulating, processing, and extracting value from large disconnected datasets
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment
  • Experience with relational SQL and NoSQL databases, including Postgres and Snowflake
  • Experience with data pipeline and workflow management tools: Azkaban, Luigi, Airflow, etc.
  • Experience with object-oriented/object function scripting languages: Python, Java, C++, Scala, etc.

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

I started at Hometap as a co-op, so much of my experience with the technology we were using had been in a classroom setting. I came on full-time after graduating from Northeastern, and now as a software engineer, I get to concentrate more on a specific domain and have the opportunity to contribute towards and execute on bigger projects.

Nishanth

Software Engineer

How do you empower your team to be more creative?

I encourage our design team to leverage each other's unique expertise and individual passions. One team member is amazing at illustration, where another is a user testing wizard. Still another is an absolute expert when it comes to the UX craft and best practices. We all learn from and are inspired by each other.
