Who We Are:

ActBlue builds and maintains a powerful online fundraising platform for Democratic campaigns, progressive organizations, and nonprofits working to create a better future. We put power in the hands of small-dollar donors by making it easier for grassroots supporters to make their voices heard and by helping thousands of groups — from presidential candidates to environmental organizations —  build people-powered movements.

We’re a nonprofit organization, and our team has a big impact on the future of our country. Each and every one of us, from the political activists to the software engineers to the customer service pros, is fully committed to our mission. We're excited to grow this team and get ready to take on even bigger challenges as we look toward 2020 and beyond.

This Role:

The Communications and Marketing Team is responsible for managing ActBlue’s communications, as well as our online and in-person presence. This means we are the public advocates for small-dollar donors and the keepers of ActBlue’s brand and mission. We are looking to hire a Data Scientist to join our Communications and Marketing Team, working to tell the story of grassroots donors. You should be curious about small-dollar donor giving patterns, figuring out how campaigns and organizations can increase engagement with small-dollar donors, identifying sustainable fundraising strategies, and demonstrating how ActBlue’s tools have an impact on small-dollar giving. You’ll have several different audiences that you’ll need to keep in mind and build data stories for: campaign and organization professionals, digital fundraising experts, internal stakeholders, and small-dollar donors themselves.

The ideal candidate for this role will be someone who can help scale our analytical capacity to ask and answer questions. We are looking for someone experienced in reporting analytics and and building reproducible workflows. The candidate would also be quick to explore proprietary data and adept at seeking out external data sources to knit together compelling narratives. Responsibilities range from quick analytical dives to developing internal tools — R packages, dashboards, documentation — to assist in reporting and storytelling. This requires a broad range of data science skills, from transforming and cleaning data to statistical testing and visualization.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Explore and understand our data schema and contribute to an internal data dictionary.
  • Work both independently and with the Communications and Marketing Team to come up with questions to investigate and tell the story of the small-dollar donor movement.
  •  Work on a variety of internal and external reports — from blog posts and visualizations highlighting recent fundraising successes to organization analytics.
  • Manage multiple requests and projects — some under tight deadlines, and some with loosely defined instructions and desired outcomes — and prioritize accordingly.

Required Qualifications:

  • Understanding of statistical testing, A/B, multivariate, and time series analysis
  • Data visualization skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to confidently share insights with various stakeholders
  • Understanding of ways to integrate data sources
  • Advanced proficiency with SQL (we use PostgreSQL)
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with R (tidyverse, ggplot2)
  • Dedication to our mission of empowering small-dollar donors and helping nonprofits, progressive organizations, and Democratic campaigns build better fundraising programs
  • Ability to use a combination of exploratory analysis and statistical inference to discern patterns from outliers

Strongly Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with JavaScript libraries or dashboarding tools for web visualization
  • Experience with automating workflows
  • Previous experience working with data in a media organization or political campaign

Location & Compensation:

ActBlue’s office is located in Davis Square in Somerville, MA, just a few blocks from Boston’s MBTA Red Line train. This posting is for a full-time, salaried position centered in our office. Salary range: $75K-$90K, commensurate with experience and technical abilities

An Insider's view of ActBlue

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

ActBlue has incredible work life balance! Unlimited PTO is a lifesaver. I organize outside of work for local elections, mutual aid, & direct action, and sometimes that happens during the workday. Having sufficient time to rest also helps me be more motivated & enjoy work. The culture treats PTO with respect & no one is guilted for taking time off.

Crystal

Data Engineer

What projects are you most excited about?

Our team is in the beginning stages of a Roles and Permissions overhaul for our Campaign and Non-Profit users. We will be adding the ability for these entities to grant varying access levels for different users. We hope this will allow for more users to be added to the platform, while keeping their data secure.

Nate

Senior Software Engineer

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

When I first started at ActBlue in 2019, I didn’t write any code. Thanks to the supportive, mentorship-focused approach within the organization, I was given the space to learn and grow my engineering skill set. I paired regularly with my peers, did coursework, and was empowered to take on projects outside of my comfort zone.

Alli

Senior Product Designer

How do you empower your team to be more creative?

Fostering creativity starts with trust. I think innovation comes when we give individuals the autonomy to solve problems, not just build prescribed solutions. Our team collaborates early and often, empowers individuals to understand the why instead of just the what, and encourages risk through a culture of learning through iteration.

Ani

Senior Engineering Manager

What are some things you learned at the company?

As a more "seasoned" member of ActBlue, I appreciate the company's commitment to Diversity and Inclusion. I learn something new almost every single day. Working here is helping me be a better person.

Engineering Manager, DevOps
