Community Support Engineer

Help edX build a collaborative, innovative, and productive community based around the Open edX platform. Founded by Harvard and MIT, edX is focused on transforming online learning and providing quality education for everyone, everywhere. Open edX is the free open-source platform that powers edX courses as well as hundreds of sites in over 20 languages around the world. With Open edX, educators and technologists are building learning tools and creating innovative solutions to benefit learners across a broad range of needs, skills and abilities.

As a Community Support Engineer, you will be responsible for enabling our community of developers and operators to be productive and successful. A successful support engineer will encourage the development of substantial contributions and increase adoption of the Open edX platform. This is not a software engineer position, but it can grow in that direction over time! Instead you act as a vocal advocate for community priorities within the edX engineering and product organizations.

We know this is an unusual role. If you think you can do this -- however you came by your unique combination of skills -- we want to hear from you!

Responsibilities:

  • Engage with the community to answer questions, fix bugs and enable new-to-development community members
  • Identify areas for improvement in our setup and customization processes. Document and implement those improvements
  • Be the face of the edX organization to the community, including active participation in community events, giving talks to adjacent communities about what makes the project great and opportunities to contribute, travel as needed (10% or less)
  • Participate actively in the contribution process, providing first-line code reviews and guidance to the community and shepherding contributions through the process of being reviewed by other teams
  • Help improve code samples, training materials and other resources to enable developers to learn how to contribute to or extend the Open edX platform
  • Contribute to defining the overall strategy for increasing adoption of and contribution to the Open edX platform, including defining and tracking metrics and setting and achieving goals based on the metrics and strategy

REQUIRED:

  • Passion for enabling developers and community-building
  • Experience interacting directly with users in a support or advisory role
  • Exposure to software development
  • Good problem-solving and time-management skills

PREFERRED:

  • Active participation in an open source community and contribution to Open Source Projects
  • Experience with working on a project with international scale
  • Desire to attend local meetups, bonus points for experience presenting to local meetups or conferences
  • Familiarity with CI systems in general, or Ansible specifically

EdX has outstanding benefits and a competitive compensation package. Are you ready to be part of our team?

Sorry, Visa sponsorship is not available.
