At Uplight, the clean energy conversation isn’t just about how to power the future, it’s about who gets to speak. “It’s incredibly important to have a seat at the table,” said Software Engineering Manager Betty Leicht. “As a woman, Asian, veteran, working mother, I am comfortable showing up authentically with all parts of me at Uplight,” she continued. It’s a sense of belonging shared by Program Manager Natalia Tanko, who believes diversity is the key to problem solving. “The climate crisis is deeply intertwined with the social issues we’re facing in the world — gender, sexuality, race, income,” they said. “In order for us to come up with meaningful solutions, we need to have everyone involved in creating ideas and building our future.”

Everyone Wants to Be Part of the Team

“Everyone wants to feel connected and be part of a team and, more importantly, belong on the team,” Betty Leicht told Built In. Leicht’s intersectional identities are celebrated at Uplight, where she says ERGs — like Military Connection, which she co-leads — and volunteer opportunities help her feel part of something greater. “Knowing that people care about my presence and value my contributions makes me feel like I belong,” Leicht said. “I firmly believe that belonging increases productivity, effectiveness and buy-in.”

Remote Work Is Opening New Doors at Uplight

Having leaders with different backgrounds matters, says David Huang. “Seeing leaders of Asian descent has reinforced that, yes, I too can be a leader,” Huang said, adding that working with diverse leadership has helped him unlearn gender stereotypes and management misnomers. Huang attributes Uplight’s diverse ecosystem to its remote model. “It’s created a level playing field across the world and opened up doors to hiring amazing people,” he said. “For the product team, diversity of thought and experience helps us empathize with our utility customers.”

My colleagues have helped me be more conscious of creating spaces to hear all voices in the room, which benefits everyone. A goal of mine is to create safe spaces as we work on impactful ways to tackle decarbonization together.

Building Community

Uplighters Find Safety In Shared Experiences

It was in an Uplight ERG event that Natalia Tanko first felt safe enough to share their pronouns. “This small cohort shared experiences of gender, sexuality and the workplace — I felt safe enough to be vulnerable with them,” said Tanko, a member of the Organized Marginalized Genders group, Women in Tech and PRISM. This potential for vulnerability is a vital achievement in a historically homogenous industry like tech. “As a queer, nonbinary, Latino person, having a DEI&B community with shared experiences at work is really important for me to feel safe and seen,” they said.
