6 legal startups in Boston you should know

It may seem surprising, but in the last few years, there’s been a noticeable increase in the number of startups innovating in the legal space, with entrepreneurs pitching new products that do everything from streamlining the production of legal documents to monitoring patent litigation cases. Though the law may still be a tedious field, here are six startups trying to shake up the age-old industry.

Shoobx offers a legal process engine that helps startups manage their corporate activities so entrepreneurs can invest their time (and money) elsewhere. From formation to exit, Shoobx helps startups like Toast, TellusLabs and VentureApp navigate their collaboration with legal, equity management and even human resources all in one place.

Brightleaf uses semantic intelligence technology to mine important information from text-based documents, making it accessible and easy to manage for corporations and business law firms trying to produce legal documents. Their platform also helps companies collaborate with their law firms.

LinkSquares offers a web app that helps legal and finance teams automate the search and reporting process surrounding company contracts. Used by startups like DraftKings and TraceLink, LinkSquares lets companies store all their contracts in a single, cloud-based application, searching them instantly and tracking them continuously using machine learning.

Litagility’s software applications serve as a centralized and secure place for managing and monitoring patent litigation cases. Teams can review financial performance data at the portfolio, team and attorney level, or analyze the merits for a specific case.

Notarize is an on-demand, remote electronic notary service that allows anyone to legally notarize a document from their iPhone or computer at any time. The startup’s services are valid nationally and connect customers with licensed electronic notaries by live video call.

Whether it is required by the law or by a customer, companies must have real-time visibility into their compliance status. Practical Assurance offers a single, collaborative platform that helps companies prepare for an audit every step of the way, assigning key tasks to process owners in one place, saving the significant amount of time that surrounds traditional compliance reporting. The company also helps with ongoing compliance management, identifying compliance gaps and offering suggestions for remediation.
