An exhibit highlighting the use of gold in art in contrasting work by four artists recently opened at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, running through mid-January. Gold has been used to create art and artifacts for more than 6,000 years, and the new exhibit highlights how the artists advance and reimagine the “allure and significance” of the precious metal, according to the museum.

Elsewhere in the Boston area, three local tech companies are reimagining the gold standard of benefits for their employees. Across industries, 1uphealth, Numerated and Dispatch are finding new ways to support their colleagues with perks that improve their lives both personally and professionally.

While the companies share some benefits in common, like generous parental leave and PTO policies, others provide unique insight into the workplace culture. At 1upheath, new hires receive a week of paid leave prior to their start date, allowing their new employees to recharge and start their new role refreshed and feeling secure through their transition. Meanwhile, Dispatch offers an annual “adventure fund” that pays for expenses like national park or ski passes, and Numerated colleagues receive care packages at home.

For Boston professionals seeking their next role, these hybrid-friendly companies have perks and benefits that shine.

What they do: 1upHealth connects healthcare providers, payers and other stakeholders through their Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources platform in order to enable better data-sharing and improve patient data management.

The perks:

  • Week of paid leave prior to beginning employment
  • 1upHealth covers 100 percent of employee health insurance
  • Every other Friday off during the summer
  • Generous parental leave with a transitional back-to-work program
  • Remote and hybrid-eligible roles with a home office stipend

Timing is everything: “The time is right for the digital transformation of healthcare, and it will be dependent on clean, accessible, comprehensive data,” CEO Joe Gagnon told Built In Boston last summer. Their secure platform has positioned the company to help the healthcare industry connect, control and compute data, and Gagnon’s growing team is ready to take on ambitious goals. “1upHealth is positioned to fundamentally change the healthcare system through driving improvements in quality, cost, care and patient experience,” he said. “We know the only way we can accomplish this is through tackling challenges with courage and curiosity, and supporting and encouraging each other.”

What they do: Numerated is a SaaS digital loan origination system that simplifies how businesses connect with banks and credit unions. Their data-driven platform streamlines processes across business banking products and builds efficiency for both borrowers and lenders.

    The perks:

    • Care packages delivered to employees’ homes
    • Remote work for all positions
    • Unlimited vacation policy
    • Generous parental leave
    • Paid industry certifications

Investing in well-being: As a remote employee herself, Director of People Operations Rhonda Graves is proud of Numerated’s commitment to making remote work work. “We’re a remote-first company, so we’ve spent a lot of time building an environment where employees feel energized, engaged, and — most importantly — able to foster a sense of belonging,” she told Built In Boston in May. “We’re invested in ensuring employees have what they need for an effective at-home office setup, providing access to the best technology and putting an emphasis on communication and continuous feedback.”

What they do: With a proprietary platform and technology integrations, Dispatch partners with consumer brands to provide insight into field operations and simplify and improve home service logistics.

      The perks:

      • $200 annual “adventure fund” reimbursement
      • $100 monthly Uber credits for personal use
      • Unlimited PTO
      • Paid parental leave with transitional back-to-work program
      • Health coverage begins day one and is 90 percent covered by Dispatch

Battling burnout: Dispatch’s commitment to employee well-being and work-life balance starts at the top. “Companies must maintain humanistic policies related to productivity and work-life balance,” CEO Patrick Burns told Built In Boston earlier this year. Burns encourages managers to build a culture that values both balance and performance. In a practical sense, he asks his team to “develop a productivity model that prioritizes goals and company achievements rather than office hours, while filtering out managers who adhere to outdated expectations.
