MassMutual executives and employees joined Gov. Charlie Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito Wednesday to celebrate the completion of the company’s new 17-story office building on the Boston Harbor waterfront.
The glass high-rise building offers sweeping views of Boston Harbor, along with two open air terraces. The first two floors are available for retail use.
MassMutual has more than 600 employees in Boston. Those employees were previously located at 1 Marina Park Blvd., along with a small space on Atlantic Avenue. The new building has room for continued growth, with the capacity for 1,000 employees.
The building at 10 Fan Pier Blvd. is located in Fan Pier, a $4 billion mixed-use neighborhood including luxury condominiums, restaurants and public spaces along the Boston Harbor waterfront.
MassMutual remains headquartered in Springfield, as it has since its founding in 1851. The Boston office will bring closer proximity to the city’s financial market, startup community and workforce.
“Today’s opening not only represents a milestone in the development of the Boston Seaport, but a new chapter in MassMutual’s 170-year-history,” MassMutual Chairman, President and CEO Roger Crandall said in a statement. “Our campus at 10 Fan Pier connects our past and present while positioning us for the future, allowing us to draw on the best talent and resources from Springfield and Boston as we look to help millions more secure their future and protect the ones they love.”
The 310,000-square-foot building, designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects and developed by The Fallon Company, was designed for a LEED Platinum certification and uses 70 percent fewer natural resources than the average regional office building.
One floor of the building has been donated to MassChallenge, strengthening MassMutual’s partnership with the accelerator and support of the regional innovation ecosystem.
At the ceremony, the MassMutual Foundation also announced a $1 million donation to King Boston, which honors the legacy of Coretta Scott King and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with efforts to address economic and racial inequities. The MassMutual Foundation’s donation will go toward the creation of King Boston’s Center for Economic Justice in Roxbury.
The MassMutual Foundation previously provided $1 million to Boston Medical Center’s Health Equity Accelerator. Earlier this year, MassMutual also launched a $50 million MM Catalyst Fund, which invests in Black-owned businesses and Massachusetts technology companies based outside of Boston.
