In a survey conducted by HR Daily of 19,700 post-exit interviews, 89 percent of employers think their employees left for more money. But the employees who actually left for more money? Just 12 percent.

Data from a Jobvite survey provided more insight into what job seekers are actually looking for in new careers: a strong company culture, according to 46 percent of respondents.

Companies benefit from cultivating strong company cultures, too, as employees who respond positively when asked about company culture have higher upticks in productivity, engagement and creativity

We talked with professionals from three growing tech companies, Abacus Insights, PathAI and Mimecast, who are working to disrupt healthcare, advance pathology tech and hack cyberthreats, respectively. They not only provided a glimpse into what makes their organization’s culture special, but also gave insight into the professional development opportunities and interesting projects job seekers can expect from their employer.

What they do: Healthcare data can be overwhelming. To help organize patient information, Abacus Insights’ secure management platform funnels that information into one space and offers actionable insights. The outcome? A more personalized patient experience and reduced administrative burden.

Describe your company culture in one word: “Multidimensional,” Senior Director of Product Management Anusha Tomar said.

Explain more. “Everybody on this team works hard, but we also celebrate each other’s personal lives and interests,” Tomar said. “When we started working remotely in March, the company encouraged us to adjust our schedules and take time for personal needs like childcare, health and well-being. Despite working remotely, we’re still able to use Slack and Zoom to enjoy shared interests like pets, books, music, food, movies, etc.”

Everybody on this team works hard, but we also celebrate each other’s personal lives and interests.”

How long have you been with the company, and what professional growth or development have you seen in that time?

“I was lucky enough to intern with Abacus back in the summer of 2017,” Tomar said. “We weren’t incorporated and had nothing beyond a handful of motivated people and a PowerPoint deck. I got to see what it takes to build not just a product, but also an entire company, team, common culture, vision and scale. But it’s been a learning experience all the way, from building a cloud-based product to early-stage product management.

“One of my other favorite things about Abacus is our collaborative mindset, which to me is a feature of a growth-and-development culture. People bring a wide range of experience with them. They’re passionate about our mission, and they genuinely want to help you learn and succeed.”

What they do: Using a cloud-based platform, Mimecast helps users get ahead of email and web cybersecurity threats. The company also works with clients to provide employee training for how to reduce security risks, protect data and reduce threats.

Describe your company culture in one word: “Values,” Director of Talent Acquisition Matthew Liptak said.

We expect everyone at Mimecast to worry more about inertia than about mistakes.”

Explain more. “We set aggressive goals and work together to achieve them,” Liptak said. “Our distinctive culture, created by ‘Mimecasters,’ is our greatest asset. It is built on openness, a willingness to take on the toughest challenges, and our tenacity in identifying and solving the big problems. Mimecasters have a warrior spirit, a sense of fun, and the ability to do the right thing naturally.

“Our culture is not an edict, enshrined in a set of policies. It is a set of values inherent in the way we interact, how we see the world and how we go about getting things done. We expect everyone at Mimecast to worry more about inertia than about mistakes. Growth is not just about scale. It’s also about being better and maturing without getting old. We want to make sure our culture remains intact even as we grow.”

How long have you been with the company, and what professional growth or development have you seen in that time?

“I joined the company in March and wherever you join us, whatever your background, skills or experience, you’ll be working in a results-oriented, high-performance environment with unparalleled scope and a variety of work,” Liptak said. “We celebrate career development across the company and there are always opportunities for growth and advancement.”

What they do: PathAI’s mission is to improve patient outcomes with AI-powered technology. PathAI’s platform makes improvements to the accuracy of diagnosis and the efficacy of treatment of diseases like cancer, leveraging modern approaches in machine and deep learning. PathAI works with leading life sciences companies and researchers to advance precision medicine.

Describe your company culture in one word: “Humility,” CPO Andy Moffit said.

Explain more. “It’s a core value at PathAI, which comes from the personal examples of our co-founders: CEO Andy Beck and CTO Aditya Khosla,” Moffit said. “Despite their distinctive expertise and experience, there is a curiosity to explore, a willingness to take on new challenges and an eagerness to learn from our mistakes embedded in everything we do.”

There’s a curiosity to explore and a willingness to take on new challenges.”

How long have you been with the company, and what professional growth or development have you seen in that time?

“I joined PathAI only seven weeks ago,” Moffit said. “And, given COVID-19, I’ve only worked virtually with my new colleagues so far. Despite this, I’ve become quickly integrated in all aspects of our operations and invested in achieving our mission of improving patient outcomes through AI-powered pathology. I’m sure this stems from the pervasive culture of collaboration and the significant investments we make in the development and growth of our people.”
