Artificial intelligence is being used across the field of medicine to find new ways to provide better care, so it’s no surprise that dentistry can benefit from this technology too.

Cambridge-based Overjet launched to help dentists do a better job by combining dental imaging techniques and information — like X-rays, photographs, medical history, dental history and so on — with AI and computer vision. By doing so, the company’s technology is able to spot potential problems and suggest the best method of treatment.

This AI technology is built into Overjet’s platform, which it sells to dental offices as a SaaS solution.

On Tuesday, Overjet announced that it raised a $7.85M seed funding round from Crosslink Capital and the E14 Fund. The funding round was reported by TechCrunch and confirmed by Overjet on the company’s social media accounts.

Overjet didn’t immediately respond to Built In’s request for comment.

The startup points out that dental diagnoses and treatments vary greatly from dentist to dentist. Some dentists may miss small cavities, others may be conservative with the operations they suggest. Whatever the reason, the care you receive depends on the dentist you go to. Overjet believes that, through its AI platform, it can provide a more standardized and objective form of care. It can also help train dental practices or help them scale.

Founded in 2018, Overjet is still a young company. TechCrunch reports that it only has about 20 employees. But this new round of funding will give the company resources to expand by hiring more people and convincing more dental practices to use its technology.
