2 Boston healthcare startups pull in $85M in total funding

Two Boston healthcare startups raised $85M total in funding this week, allowing the companies to expand their staff and increase their customer offerings.

GE-backed Iora Health raised a whopping $75M Series D round led by Temasek, an investment firm owned by Singapore's government, while newly rebranded Ovia Health raised $10M in investor funding.

Iora, a startup hoping to reinvent healthcare, will be using the funding to expand their primary care offerings around the country, said CEO and founder Rushika Fernandopulle. Currently, the company has 34 primary care practices in 11 U.S. markets designed to help patients manage their health and navigate the healthcare system.

Iora also said the funding would go toward expanding their proprietary collaborative care IT platform “Chirp.”

Meanwhile, Ovia Health, a startup making mobile apps that help women plan for and start families, said their $10M in funding would go toward doubling their staff from 35 to 60 workers, Ovia spokesperson Danielle Rand said. The funding, driven by previous investors including Zaffre Investments and Martin Ventures, will also help Ovia Health make their apps more available to employers using Ovia Health’s benefits platform. Currently the benefits platform is used by companies including General Electric, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Optum.

Ovia Health’s funding coincided with the company’s decision to rebrand from “Ovuline.” The company’s suite of apps have long been marketed under “Ovia Health,” so the company said it made sense to abandon the company name most users were not familiar with.

"The name Ovia Health is inspired by the millions who love our apps, Ovia Fertility, Ovia Pregnancy, and Ovia Parenting, and by our commitment to empower women and families to take control of their healthcare," Rand added.
