Assistant Controller
The Role:
We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled accounting professional to be part of a growing Finance team. In this high-impact role, you will lead key day-to-day financial operations and compliance functions. You will oversee the month-end close process, and partner with the VP, Controller and peers to drive continuous improvement in financial operations. This is an opportunity to lead the development and implementation of processes and internal controls to support our growing organization. The ideal candidate will have a strategic mindset and hands-on approach.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual close and financial reporting process
- Review monthly reconciliations and journal entries prepared by team members
- Identify, research, and resolve complex accounting issues; implement new accounting standards and consult with auditors and other specialists as needed (including ASC 606 and ASC 842)
- Document and/or review technical accounting assessments and policy memos in accordance with GAAP
- Stay abreast of existing and emerging financial accounting and reporting principles, assessing their applicability to the company, and developing action plans for adoption when needed
- An integral part of the preparation and filing of SEC filings, including 10-Qs, 10-Ks, 8-Ks, and annual proxy filings
- Coordinate with other functions, including members of senior management, and impacted stakeholders to obtain information necessary to ensure accurate disclosures in the company’s financial statements
- Continuously reassess and maintain appropriate internal controls over financial reporting, including assessing risks and developing new controls as necessary
- Support the annual audit and serve as liaison to auditors, consultants, and other service providers
- Manage the Company’s equity accounting process
- Assist with review of controls environment and risk assessment; establish and maintain internal controls
- Partner with FP&A on monthly budget to actual analysis
- Assist Legal with corporate compliance & risk activities and legal entity management
- Lead process improvement and automation projects to support scalable growth
- Coach and develop accounting team, with an emphasis on cross-training and providing growth and learning opportunities
- Ad hoc projects as required by the Corporate Controller and/or CFO
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field, with a CPA license
- Six to eight years of experience in public accounting, biotechnology, and/or pharmaceutical industry
- Certified public accountant
- Strong understanding of US GAAP, SEC reporting requirements, and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance requirements
- A team player willing to step in and help with other areas of accounting
- Excellent analytical, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Strong attention to detail, prioritization, and problem-solving skills
