Associate Designer User Experience (UX)
What we’re about:
Cantina is a strategic design and development agency. We accelerate an organization's ability to innovate, grow, and deliver better digital products and services. Our design team works closely with our clients to deliver solutions that consider all aspects of the customer experience. We start with the human experience and design with, not for people using qualitative and quantitative evidence to show our work and tell a compelling story.
About you:
You’re a UX designer with a track record of data-informed, outcome-driven work eager to join a team of thoughtful problem solvers. You are curious, critical, and equally comfortable considering the big picture and the tiny details. You’re pragmatic instead of dogmatic, and not married to one program or philosophy. You prefer an ugly design to an unusable one. Your portfolio speaks for itself, but you’ve got more to say. You are able to explain the details of design implementation but also tell the story of the decision making process that’s behind the final design solution.
You have experience translating business and user goals into human-centered designs through some combination of research, wireframing, visual design, prototyping, and usability testing. You know, and love solving many of the common UX problems organizations face but aren’t afraid of the bleeding edge of technology either. You are familiar with emerging technologies such as Machine Learning, Virtual Reality, and IoT, but also aware of their limitations and constraints.
Must-haves:

  • A strong portfolio showing solid interaction and visual design capabilities
  • Foundational knowledge of both web and mobile design
  • A passion for learning new methods & tools in order to use the right tool for the job
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment
  • A self-starter mentality with motivation to work independently
  • Proficiency with industry-standard design tools like Sketch & the Adobe Suite, and prototyping tools like InVision, Marvel, UXPin etc.
  • The ability to identify project issues and communicate them effectively
  • Strong design opinions, loosely held - You know how to advocate for users, but also how to problem solve for the good of the team and the specific project requirements

Nice-to-haves:

  • Some level of dabbling in code - be it HTML/CSS, mobile dev, or animation
  • Experience working with IoT, Machine Learning, Augmented/Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, or other connected technologies
  • The ability to communicate your expertise via writing
  • An understanding of the unwritten rules of Slack’s @-channel

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect and synthesize complicated requirements and distill them into effective solutions
  • Support user research and customer interviews
  • Balance stakeholder and user feedback, analyze metrics, and use evidence to keep the user’s needs at heart
  • Work within the bounds of existing client style guides, or create new ones from scratch to ensure visual consistency across the project
  • Create a wide range of deliverables, from low-fidelity prototypes to development-ready visual comps and design assets
  • Communicate interactions and flows to other teams and departments while working effectively within an agile environment
  • Deliver design solutions on time and on budget, with appropriate documentation
  • Improve your skills with every project and share the lessons you’ve learned

Compensation

  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Eligible for target bonus of up to 20% of base salary

Benefits and perks

  • 100% employer-paid insurance premiums for health, dental, vision, and disability
  • Optional company-paid mobile phone plan
  • Company-paid bike share program
  • Flexible work arrangements (such as work from home days) available upon request
  • Paid parental leave for up to six (6) weeks
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match
  • Vacation time accrued to twenty (20) days per year
  • Convenient downtown Boston location
  • Snacks, refreshments, coffee, tea, and more in the office
