The Opportunity:
The VP, Product Management, athenaClinicals, will have the opportunity to lead the team responsible for our Electronic Medical Record service used by over 50,000 providers. Continue to grow our product management team and guide strategy as we look for opportunities to improve our services and grow into new markets. Lead the integration of our mobile team into the core product team.
Position Summary:
The Vice President of Product Management will be accountable as the Product Manager for the success of the full athenaClinicals product and services suite in ambulatory care settings. They will drive product vision, strategic planning, and portfolio decisions; create goals and metrics for success of the product; collaborate on resource allocation for their organization with engineering and design leads; and drive the organizational design of their teams for success. The Vice President will partner with key leaders across divisions at athena to ensure consistency with all athena products. They will have a team of direct reports responsible for managing the key areas of the product.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Creates the Product Level Strategy

  • Creates and maintains the product vision and communicates how it helps achieve the athenaOne vision
  • Prioritizes strategic intents for the operation and strategic level of their organization, and coordinates with dependent teams for guidance
  • Sets and enforces guardrails within their teams to make sure all actions are in line with the vision and values of the product
  • Sets the goals, outcomes, and metrics for the organization to measure success of their product, owning the adoption and utilization rollout
  • Defines the market boundaries around the stages of development for their product
  • Represents the best interests of their product and customers to Senior Leadership team when discussing strategic planning on a company level
  • Manages and defines the portfolio level product strategy


Directs the team on execution of Strategy

  • Aligns the product teams around the vision and strategy for the product, making sure it is well understood and viable
  • Collaborates with leaders across Product Management and adjacent services to align on athena-wide success metrics
  • Provides opportunities for learning about the market and about product management best practices, in order to elevate the overall Product Team’s capabilities
  • Drives critical business decisions including pricing and build vs. buy
  • Establish processes and best practices that empower team to develop portfolio and product strategy
  • Ensure continued development of product management team by implementing solutions for learning and teaching
  • Define priorities for company release cadence process (PRSM) and work with Product Marketing on proper client and organizational messaging


Team Leadership

  • Meet scorecard goals by leading, inspiring, and developing a team of athenistas, modeling effective relationship building, ensuring high employee engagement and managing staff career progression
  • Accountable for workforce planning, staffing/forecasting of resource requirements across multiple geographies. Continually assess and optimize team structure as well as processes, policies and procedures to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness
  • Set expectations of direct reports and indirect reports, offering effective delegation and feedback
  • Set and monitor annual performance goals & objectives, including responsibility for performance appraisals


Education, Experience, & Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Degree (Bachelor’s or Masters) in Computer Science, Business, or Product Design preferred
  • Understanding of healthcare / health IT environment preferred
  • 15+ years relevant product management experience with at least 5+ years leading large-scale product brands
  • Technical understanding (mobile, SaaS, data) – ability to gut check technical feasibility and timelines and remove technical development barriers
  • Understanding of product management best practices, including agile development environments; Agile certification a plus
  • Proven track record of successfully defining and managing consumer-oriented products throughout the entire product life cycle
  • Experience successfully managing both beta and QA releases
  • Domain experience in health care is preferable
  • Deep analytical skills
  • Experience with escalation management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience leading teams and managing direct reports
  • Experience working with a global R&D organization

  • Travel required, predicting 20-30%; time may vary and will include client site visits, conferences, trade shows, Sales and Marketing events, trainings, and visiting our other offices in the US and India
